EPS Special Activity Fund – first call for projects open
The EPS Council decided to establish the EPS Special Activity Fund in 2016.The dual purpose of this fund was to allow donors to contribute to a fund to finance projects that go beyond the standard EPS activity, and to allow organisers to apply to the fund for EPS financing.
IONS conferences
The large-scale networking conferences of the International OSA Network of Students (IONS®) are “organized by students, for students”. The 2017 European meeting will be hosted for the first time by the Romanian OSA and SPIE Student Chapters as well as the European Physical Society (EPS) Young Minds Section of the National Institute for Laser, Plasma and Radiation Physics (INFLPR), and co-hosted by the Ukrainian OSA Student Chapter of the Institute of Radiophysics and Electronics in Balvanyos (RO) from 25-28 July 2017.
EPS Young Minds Take IBM’s Qubits for a Spin
This past May, IBM Research announced the Quantum Experience, an experimental cloud-enabled quantum computing platform. The technology essentially made 35 years of IBM’s quantum computing research available to students, researchers and general science enthusiasts, at the click of a button.

My name is Eva and I have been the chair of the European Physical Society (EPS) Young Minds (YM) project since last July. In 2010 I finished a degree in Computer Engineering and 3 years later I joined the Optics and Photonics Research Group of Castellón in Spain (GROC). Now I am doing my PhD at the University Jaume I in Castellón, and sometimes I wonder how a computer engineer can be the chair of a Committee engaging physics students in outreach. Here is a possible answer.
Activities of the Prague EPS Young Minds section
The Prague (CZ) EPS Young Minds (YM) section was established in April 2015, and since then its members have organised 22 social and scientific events for university and high school students. These events took place mainly at the Faculty of Nuclear Sciences and Physical Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague, where the section is based.

Throughout my childhood the process of learning science relied basically on educators together with books. Nowadays, the access to all kind of videos and online courses is only a stone’s throw away, thanks to new technologies. The means used to teach and communicate science have changed over the years. Nevertheless, the general way to connect with people remains basically unaltered.
Antigone Marino: fostering the creativity of the young minds
Antigone Marino is a researcher in physics, at the Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems of the Italian National Research Council. She received her doctorate in 2004, at the University of Naples, in Italy. She studies soft matter optics applied to telecommunication, with a special interest in liquid crystal technologies.
5th EPS Young Minds Leadership Meeting: news and impressions
The 5th Young Minds Leadership Meeting (15-16 July 2016) and the 13th Young Minds Action Committee Meeting (14 July 2016) took place in Budapest, hosted by ELTE – the Eotvos Lorand University. It was a three-day marathon, full of exciting events, talks, bright ideas and important news.
EPS Young Minds and the IONS Naples 2016 meeting
The Naples Young Minds (YM) EPS section hosted the IONS 2016 meeting, held in Naples from 6th to 8th July 2016. IONS the International OSA Network of Students, was started in 2007 by the Optical Society (OSA). The network is open to all young scientists working in the fields of optics and photonic.
Finnish Young Minds – the northernmost EPS Young Minds Section has been created
The northernmost EPS Young Minds Section, Finnish Young Minds, was created on March 29, at the 2016 Physics Days conference in Oulu, Finland. At the meeting, the bylaws and the action plan of the Finnish Young Minds section were accepted, the board was nominated and the Finnish Young Minds section was able to start its activities.
Week of Science and Technology at the University of Aveiro
The University of Aveiro, in Portugal, organised the “Week of Science and Technology” for the 16th year. It took place last year, from the 23rd to the 27th November. High school students from around the country were invited to discover, experiment and explore the science which is carried out in the University. The aim was the promotion of science and technology, but students also learned, and learned a lot! In this week, they could participate in entertaining experiments, laboratory activities, many talks or even exhibitions or field trips.
