On 21 June 2013, at the open session of the CERN Council, EPS Vice president L. Cifarelli was invited by CERN Council President A. Zalewska to make a presentation of the recent independent analysis commissioned by EPS from the Centre for Economics and Business Research [Cebr] on the importance of physics – in terms of physics-based industries – to the economies of Europe.
The report, using statistics available in the public domain through Eurostat, covers 29 European countries…
On 30 April 1993, CERN made the technology behind the World Wide Web available for everyone to use. From that day on, the web has changed all aspects of society, a revolution that can be compared to the invention of the printing-press in the 15th century. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the free, open web, CERN has started a project to preserve the digital assets that are associated with the birth of the web.
During the 1980s, the internet was already well-known in academic institutions, being mainly used for email…
The ATRAP experiment at CERN’s Antiproton Decelerator [AD] has measured the magnetic moment of the antiproton with highest accuracy to date. ATRAP’s new result may help to eventually unveil one of the great mysteries of modern physics: the matter-antimatter imbalance of the Universe. Results are described in a paper published in Physical Review Letters last month.
In order to make the most accurate measurements of the antiprotons’ properties, the ATRAP’s team was able…
At EPS Council in Strasbourg, on 5 April 2013, the award ceremony of the EPS Edison Volta Prize 2012 took place in the presence of two of the three winners: Rolf Dieter Heuer and Stephen Myers.
The European Physical Society, the Centro di Cultura Scientifica “Alessandro Volta”, Como, Italy (birth town of A. Volta) and EDISON, Milan, Italy (Europe’s oldest energy company, founded in 1884) established the EPS Edison Volta Prize to promote excellent research and achievement in physics…
2012 was quite a year for the CERN Large Hadron Collider [LHC]! A year of fundamental achievements both in physics and technology, successfully marking the end of the first 3 years period of data taking of LHC. A two years technical stop is now foreseen to allow improvements that will not only permit the machine to reach its full design energy (7 TeV per beam) and increased luminosity, but also allow the experiments to reach their utmost performance.
So far the LHC has been making continuous progress, exceeding the more optimistic luminosity goals and beam…
The European Physical Society [EPS], the Centro di Cultura Scientifica “Alessandro Volta” and Edison S.p.A. are proud to announce the award of the 2012 EPS Edison Volta Prize for outstanding contributions to physics to:
The Sponsoring Consortium for Open Access Publishing in Particle Physics [SCOAP3] was officially at CERN on 1 October 2012.
This new publishing model, which grants free access to peer-reviewed articles in particle physics, redirects the funding traditionally spent by libraries for subscriptions to an internationally coordinated common fund.
Twelve publishers have been retained in the first call for tender…
The 20 September 2012, CERN Council elected Agnieszka Zalewska as its 21st President. She will follow Michel Spiro, whose 3-year term will end at the end of December.
“I feel particularly honoured to have presided over the CERN Council through a period that has seen the first major results from the Large hadron Collider,” said Michel Spiro. “I’d like to wish Professor Zalewska all the very best as the LHC adventure continues to unfold…”
The UK Science and Technology Facilities Council [STFC] has launched a new newsletter at CERN, entitled “UK News from CERN”. The fortnightly publication – which is now in its fourth issue – intends to relay British news from CERN back to the UK and is aimed at both researchers and key stakeholders in the government.
The first four issues of the newsletter can be downloaded…
The LHC saw its first collisions of lead ions with protons on 13 September. The largest experiments – ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb – all recorded lead ion-proton collisions in this test, which precedes the main run planned for January-February next year.

On 4 July this year – following the announcement of the new particle discovery from CERN – European Physical Society president Luisa Cifarelli interviewed Guido Tonelli, former spokesperson of CERN’s CMS Collaboration.
Hello, Guido.
With respect to today’s exciting announcement, how are you feeling?
It is very difficult for me to describe today’s emotions. For people that have been searching…
Dear Readers,
The European Physical Society [EPS] has been duly responding to various questionnaires from Brussels, to provide significant input to the European Union’s scientific policies, namely in: ‘Areas of untapped potential for the development of the European Research Area’ and ‘Towards a Common Strategic Framework for EU Research and Innovation Funding’.
In particular, the EPS has been repeatedly stressing the importance of investment…
