The Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has appointed Wang Yifang as their new director. The decision was announced during a meeting held at the institute on the 24 October.

The Institute of High Energy Physics [IHEP] is the biggest basic science research centre in China. Fields studied at the institute include accelerator physics and technologies, astrophysics, particle physics and synchrotron and nuclear radiation applications. IHEP has extensive relationships with many high energy physics laboratories worldwide, and participates in many international experiments. The institute is employs over 1,200 people, and supports an additional 400 graduate students and post-docs.

“Committing to excellence and international partnership, I look forward to working together with all the IHEP staff to efficiently operate a comprehensive institute, advance the frontiers of science and serve the needs of science and those of the nations,” said Wang.

Wang, who has been a research fellow at IHEP since 2001, is noted to have written over 300 articles spanning a wide variety of fields from neutrino physics to data analysis methods. He is a graduate of both Nanjing University and the University of Florence, and has also worked in MIT, at Stanford University and was the co-spokesperson of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment during its construction – the design of which he proposed in 2003

Currently, Wang is the spokesperson of the BESIII experiment at the Beijing Electron Positron collider, having assembled the BESIII collaboration from its inception.

“We are delighted to have Dr. Wang Yifang – a high-calibre scientist and an excellent leader – as the new Director of IHEP,” said Chen Hesheng, Wang’s predecessor, who has been the Director of IHEP since 1998. “His scientific leadership and international vision will shape the Institute’s future. This is a great choice for IHEP, and for the high energy physics community in China.”
