The International Symposium on Laser Physics and Spectroscopy, held on 11-12 November 2019 at the Institute of Spectroscopy of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISAN) in Troitsk near Moscow, was an exceptional event, organised specifically to celebrate the 80th jubilee of Vladilen Letokhov, former vice-director for research of this institute.
EPS-TIG (Technology and Innovation Group), in close collaboration with the EPS Young Minds Programme, the Soleil synchrotron and CERN, organised a hands-on Maker Event for Science, Technology and Interfaces at CERN from 4-6 November 2019.
The Great Telescope at Birr Castle, the astounding achievement of one man, has been recognised as a European Physical Society Historic Site. Karl Grandin, Chair of the EPS Historic Sites Committee, represented the Society at a ceremony on September 20, commenting on the Castle’s “remarkable and unique history”.

In May, EPS Yerevan and Artsakh Young Minds Sections won the best activity prize at 8th EPS Young Minds Leadership Meeting held in Erlangen, Germany.
The first JENAS, Joint ECFA (European Committee for Future Accelerators)-NuPECC (Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee)-APPEC (AstroParticle Physics European Consortium) Seminar, attracted 230 participants resulting in a full auditorium at the Laboratoire de l’Accélérateur Linéaire (LAL) in Orsay.
The first ever IOP Technician Awards winners were announced in October. Five winners in four categories – secondary school; further education and higher education; business and/or facilities and team – are the first technicians to be recognised by the IOP.
