The Odysseus contest, launched in July 2012, has extended its submission deadline to 15 February 2013.
Students of 14-18 years of age are invited to design and demonstrate a space-themed project. The pupils are encouraged to develop their critical thought and go beyond their actual scientific knowledge with the help of a teacher.
The contest encourages the use of techniques from the inquiry-based science education. Many resources…
This year the EPS, thanks to the initiative of the EPS Young Minds, has produced a nice calendar in poster format. The calendar has been specially designed to give at glance the essential and attractive information on the many activities of the EPS.
The EPS calendar is currently being sent to all EPS Individual Members but it can also be downloaded…
After the UNESCO endorsement last year, the EPS-coordinated proposal for an International Year of Light is working its way through the various procedural steps to the United Nations General Assembly. But serious planning for events and activities is already underway, and the first multi-partner planning meeting will take place in early February 2013 at the International Centre of Theoretical Physics [ICTP] in Trieste, Italy.
The planning meeting will involve Steering Committee representatives from the nations of Ghana and Mexico…
The EPS Nuclear Physics Division [NPD] would like to welcome its newly elected Board members, Karlheinz Langanke (GSI and TU Darmstadt – Darmstadt, Germany) and Faiçal Azaiez (Institut de Physique Nucléaire – Orsay, France).
At the same time, the EPS and the NPD would like to thank Héloïse Goutte and Horst Stöcker for their hard work and dedication over the years.
EPS Divisions and Groups are essential to the EPS. They are created by interested and motivated physicists…
Underneath the “Old Man in Military Costume” painted by the Dutch artist Rembrandt in the years 1630/31, investigations spotted another portrait which was only faintly distinguishable with all applied technologies. An international team of scientists now used a detailed mock-up to test different methods to look beneath the original painting at DESYs X-ray source DORIS and at the National Synchrotron Light Source [NSLS] of the Brookhaven National Laboratory [BNL] in the United States, as well as with a mobile X-ray scanner. The results are published as the cover story of the “Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry” [JAAS] of the British Royal Society of Chemistry…
The 5th IEEE International Nanoelectronics Conference [IEEE INEC 2013] will be held in Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore, on 2 – 4 January 2013.
The theme of the conference will be Sustainable Nanoelectronics, focusing on nanoelectronics for the future. This conference also aims to identify the paths between fundamental research and potential electronics, photonics and nano-science applications…
The Ferroelectrics UK will be held in the University of Sheffield, United-Kingdom, on 17-18 January 2013.

Invited speakers are Jurgen Roedel (TU Darmstadt, Germany), Dragan Damjanovic (EPFL, Switzerland), Satoshi Wada (Yamanashi, Japan), Ian Maclaren (Glasgow, UK), Pim Groen (TNO/Delft, Holland), and Jiri Hlinka…
A 4-week programme “Pushing the boundaries of cold atoms” will held in Stockholm, Sweden, from 21 January 2013 to 15 February 2013. It aims to bring together researchers and students working in this field, both theoreticians as well as experimentalists.
The programme focuses on new directions within the field of ultracold atomic gases. Interesting topics include for example: Synthetic gauge fields for cold atoms, Multi-component atoms, spinor condensates…
The 5th International Nanoelectronics Conference [INEC 2013] of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers [IEEE] will be held at the Resorts World Sentosa, in Singapore, on 2-4 January 2013. The theme of the conference will be future and sustainable nanoelectronics, and will aim to explore the connections between fundamental research and practical applications in this field.
The event will be conducted as four parallel symposia…
The 4th International Topical Meeting on Nanophotonics and Metamaterials [NANOMETA 2013] will be held at the Seefeld ski resort in Tirol, Austria, on 3-6 January. The event aims to bring together the materials, nanotechnology and photonics research communities to discuss recent developments and results within their fields.
The meeting will be organised into two parallel oral sessions – concerning nanophotonics and metamaterials – with mid-day breaks to allow participants to socialise and participate in recreational activities…
