EPL has published its first article from the Large Hadron Collider, in the august issue this year. The paper, submitted by the TOTEM experiment, was entitled: ‘Proton-proton elastic scattering at the LHC energy of √s = 7 TeV’.

In view of the 27th IUPAP General Assembly which will be held in London, on 31 October – 4 November this year, an EPS prospectus for thedeclaration of an International Year of Light (IYOL) is being prepared. The preliminary version can be downloaded from the EPS web page.

The European Commission has published the fourth FP7 Monitoring Report, which covers the implementation of the Framework Programme during 2007-2010. It provides, among other items, a detailed analysis of participation patterns; implementation management and quality issues; and the current situation with regard to the simplification process.

Metamaterials 2011: The Fifth International Congress on Advanced Electromagnetic Materials in Microwaves and Optics will be held in Barcelona, Spain, on 10-15 October this year.
The congress – which is being hosted by the Centre CIMITEC of the Escola d’Enginyeria at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona – will address topics in the research into in artificial electromagnetic materials and their applications.

The European Physical Society would like to pay tribute to Zenonas Rokus Rudzikas, whose passing away in June this year, at the age of 71, was sudden and unexpected.
Rudzikas was a well-respected and much liked member of the European research community. He was a member of the EPS Executive Committee, a past President of the Lithuanian Physical Society and was an active member of the European Economic and Social Council…

The second International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC 2011) will take place in the Kursaal Congress Centre in San Sebastian, Spain, between the 4-9 September this year. The programme will consist of a variety of oral presentations, poster sessions and plenary sessions.
This will be the first in the IPAC series of conferences – which had their origins in the regional conferences APAC, EPAC and PAC – to be held in Europe…
A symposium in honor of Luciano Maiani, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, is being held in the physics department of Sapienza – Università di Roma, Italy, on 21-22 September, 2011.
The event, in which a number of distinguished scientists will present their research, will celebrate Maiani’s contributions to the field of particle physics. The symposium is being sponsored by Alitalia and the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare.

The Balkan Summer Institute (BSI) 2011 will be held between 19 August and 1 September this year, in the Đerdap National Park, Serbia.
