A laser-driven ion acceleration scheme, developed in research led at the University of Strathclyde, could lead to compact ion sources for established and innovative applications in science, medicine and industry.
On 21 April 2016 in Rokkasho (Japan) a ceremony was held for the installation of the low energy section of a very powerful accelerator (LIPAc) representing a prototype for the International Fusion Material Irradiation Facility (IFMIF). The aim of IFMIF, and of the LIPAc accelerator, is the production of very high intense fluxes of high energy monoenergetic neutrons which are needed for testing the structural resistance of materials to be employed in Nuclear Fusion Reactors.
The Future Circular Collider [FCC] Week 2016 took place in Rome (Italy) from 11 to 15 April 2016 and drew more than 450 participants from science and industry. The study was kicked off in 2014 as a response to a request of the European Strategy for Particle Physics and today embraces 74 institutes from 26 countries.
