The 13th International Symposium on Nuclei in the Cosmos [NIC-XIII] will be held in Debrecen, Hungary from 7-11 July 2014.
NIC-XII is part of a series of biennal conferences addressed to nuclear physicists, astrophysicists, cosmochemists to survey the recent achievements in nuclear astrophysics.
The NIC-XIII program will cover in particular the following topics: cosmology and big bang nucleosynthesis…
The Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East [SESAME] is a 3rd-generation synchrotron light source under construction in Allan, Jordan. Like the European Organization for Nuclear Research [CERN], it was set up under the auspices of UNESCO and is now a completely independent intergovernmental organization. The accelerator system consists of a Microtron, a Booster which accelerates the beam up to 800 MeV, and the 2.5 GeV synchrotron ring. Four experimental beamlines are foreseen…
As a satellite meeting to the European Energy Conference and the EPS General Meeting in Budapest, the EPS Executive Committee [ExCom] met in the Hungarian capital at the end of October.
The ExCom approved the final version of the position paper “Managing the transition to Open Access”, which is an outcome of the Round Table that EPS organised with partners at the EPS Council 2013. Other learned societies (e.g. EuCheMS) have also endorsed…
Nigel Lockyer, director of Canada’s TRIUMF laboratory for particle and nuclear physics and a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of British Columbia, has been selected to become the next director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory [Fermilab].
N. Lockyer has a long-standing interest in medical-physics projects, including proton therapy for cancer patients. Initially an experimental particle physicist, he has directed TRIUMF since May 2007. Under his leadership…
The 35th International School of Nuclear Physics [Erice School] will be held from 16-24 September 2013 in Erice, Italy.
The theme of the 35th edition is “Neutrino Physics: Present and Future”. The school intends to provide an overview of the status of neutrino physics. In the morning the experts will give review lectures. Afternoon sessions are mainly devoted to seminars, leaving participants ample time for discussions. The event encourages recognized experts to meet with young scientists and PhD students…
The International School of nuclear physics will take place from 16-24 September 2013 in Erice, Italy.
Founded by Prof. H. Schopper in 1974, the school celebrates its 35th course. This year again, recognized experts in the field of nuclear physics and young scientist as well as PhD students will meet and discuss problems at the interface between nuclear, particle, and astrophysics.
The course will focus this year on “Neutrino Physics: Present and Future”. The invited lecturers will present a review…
The sixth edition of the Nuclear Physics in Astrophysics Conference [NPA VI] will be held from 19 to 24 May 2013 in Lisbon, Portugal. The Nuclear Physics in Astrophysics Conference is organised every 2 years by the EPS Nuclear Physics Division.
Discussions will cover many topics related to nucleosynthesis, experimental facilities, s-process, astrophysics in stars and supernovae, neutron stars, isotope detection and solar standard model…
Nominations are now open for the 2013 G.N. Flerov Prize. The commendation is to be given to individuals in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of nuclear physics. The award – which is sponsored by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research [JINR] – was established in 1992 in memory of Georgy Nikolaevich Flerov, the Russian nuclear physicist after whom the 114th chemical element, Flerovium, and the JINR Laboratory of Nuclear Reactions – in which it was discovered – have been named. The prize will be presented on the occasion of Flerov’s 100th birthday anniversary on 2 March 2013…
