Nine pioneering scientists have been named this year’s recipients of the Kavli Prizes – prizes that recognize scientists for their seminal advances in astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience.

The 2014 Kavli Prize in Astrophysics is shared between Alan H. Guth, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, Andrei D. Linde, Stanford University, USA, and Alexei A. The winners of the 2012 Kavli Prizes – which are awarded in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience – have been announced. The awards – which include a total cash prize of 1 million dollars in each field – were presented by His Majesty King Harald V of Norway at a special ceremony held in Oslo on 4 September this year.
