The first course of the Joint EPS-SIF International School on Energy – entitled “New strategies for energy generation, conversion and storage” – will be held at the Villa Monastero, in Varenna, between 30 July and 4 August this year.
The school aims to present all the fields of physics which are relevant to technologies for energy production, conversion, transmission and efficiency. Topics which will be covered during the course include: biomass; climate issues; energy saving technology; fission; fossil fuels; fusion; hydro; solar, photovoltaic and photothermal sources; and wind…
The “Second Conference of Fermi Centre Projects” took place on 19-20 April this year in Rome, Italy, in the temporary headquarters of the Museo Storico della Fisica e Centro Studi e Ricerche “Enrico Fermi”, which is presently located on the premises of the Italian Ministry of the Interior.
The conference focused on the presentation of the results and perspectives of the advanced inter- and multi-disciplinary research projects currently underway at the center. About 250 scientists, researchers and professors…
Dear Readers,
The world over, organisations like UNESCO can be seen declaring sites, buildings, monuments and gardens as the cultural or natural heritage of humankind. We are convinced that the same should apply to our scientific heritage – since science is a fundamental part of our culture. Inspired by a similar initiative of the American Physical Society, the European Physical Society [EPS] Historic Site initiative will take care of the survey of the European territory…
The 12th International Public Communication of Science and Technology [PCST] conference will be held in Florence, Italy, on 18-20 April this year. The conference, a forum for the discussion of scientific communication, will focus this year on the topics of “quality, honesty and beauty in science communication”.
The conference is being organised by the PCST International Network, and is being hosted by Observa Science in Society, Fondazione Giannino Bassetti, the Galileo Museum Florence and the Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica…

Fernando Ferroni was appointed the president of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare [INFN], by a ministerial decree, on 26 October this year. Ferroni replaces former head Roberto Petronzio, who led the INFN for the last seven years.
The Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare – the National Institute for Nuclear Physics – was founded in 1951 to oversee astroparticle, nuclear and particle physics in Italy. With sections in four of Italy’s national laboratories and most major Italian Universities, the INFN acts as the main funding agency for high energy physics in Italy, and engages in collaborations with many laboratories worldwide, including CERN and Fermilab…
The 2011 Dark Workshop will be held at the Galileo Galilei Institute for Theoretical Physics (GGI), in Arcetri, Florence, between the 25-27 October this year.
The workshop, a joint initiative by the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare commissions II and IV, will bring together the fields of astrophysics, cosmology and particle physics for a discussion on the future of research into dark energy and dark matter – culminating in a roundtable on the nature of dark energy on the afternoon of the 27 October…
The Passion for Light workshop was held on the 16 September in the Villa Monastero, in Varenna, Italy. The event – which was jointly organised by the European Physical Society and the Italian Physical Society – saw the official launch of an initiative by the EPS Quantum Electronics and Optics Division to declare 2015 the International Year of Light, under the auspices of the United Nations.
Following the opening addresses, a comprehensive series of light-themed lectures followed, covering a wide variety of topics from ‘Passion for precision’, by Theodor Hänsch; ‘Trapping the light fantastic’, by Diederik Wiersma…
Passion for Light, an international workshop being jointly organised by the European and Italian Physical Societies, is to be held on 16 September 2011 at the Villa Monastero, in Varenna, Lake Como, Italy.
