2017 is a milestone year for Italy at the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), marking the 20th anniversary of its Scientific Membership. Looking back over the last two decades, the collaboration is particularly impressive in terms of the variety, novelty and importance of its many achievements.
SIF launched an IYL 2015 webpage
On the occasion of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies in 2015 [IYL 2015], the Italian Physical Society [SIF] is acting as “contact hub” for a number of national learned societies and of national research…
Dark Skies awareness activities
The IAU will promote 5 cornerstone projects (namely Quality Lighting Teaching Kits, Cosmic Light EDU, Light: Beyond the Bulb, Cosmic Light Awareness, and the Galileoscope) to promote the dark skies awareness (as mentioned in..
The XVIII Training Course in the Physics of Strongly Correlated Systems will be held in Vietri sul Mare, Italy, from 6-17 October 2014.
During 2 weeks graduate students and Post Doctoral researchers will meet experts in condensed matter physics. This year the focus will be on topological insulators, which actually represent a promising route towards quantum computation and quantum technology.
Prof. B. Andrei Bernevig (Princeton University, USA) will deliver lectures on “Matrix…
In 2013 the Italian Physical Society [SIF], in collaboration with some of the major Italian research institutions, Centro Fermi, CNR, INAF, INFN and INRIM, commissioned an independent and quantitative analysis concerning the impact of all the industry, commerce and business sectors based on physics and physics-derived technology on the Italian economy. The study, conducted by the Deloitte, a firm specialised in business and statistical analysis, covers a 4-year period, from 2008 to 2011.The study takes into account all sectors of the economy where the use of physics…
The Superstripes 2014 conference will be held in Erice, Italy from 25 – 31 July 2014.
The conference is a course of the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture International School of Solid State Physics directed by Giorgio Benedek, also Editor in Chief of EPL.
The conference will cover many aspect of material sciences especially related to superconductivity: Fermi liquids, defects, ferroelectricity and multiferroics, 2D metals, electron-lattice intercations and polarons, structural and orbital…
The EPS together with the Italian Physical Society [SIF] will organise the 2nd Course of the Joint EPS-SIF International School on Energy in Varenna, Italy, on the Lake Como from 17-23 July 2014. The title of this Course is: “Energy: Basic concepts and forefront ideas”.
The primary goal of the School will be to present all physics fields with relevance for the technologies of energy production, conversion, transmission and savings. Their potential will be presented but also the need for more research and development to fully unfold it will be indicated. For this purpose, basic lectures and topical seminars will be…

On Thursday 5 December 2013, the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics [INFN] Frascati National Laboratory [LNF] was honoured as an EPS Historic Site for the realization of the Storage Ring AdA, the first ever particle-antiparticle collider. The AdA was built at the LNF in 1961 by a small team of Italian physicists under the lead of the Austrian physicist Bruno Touschek.
AdA was designed to store beams of 250 MeV energy. By 1962 it had stored electrons, and it was soon transferred…
On 26 May 2013, a new EPS Historic Site was inaugurated in Pontecchio di Sasso Marconi (Bologna), Italy, the 6th since the beginning of this EPS initiative.
The site is “Villa Griffone”, located on the hills nearby Bologna, a beautiful residence, which belonged to the Marconi family. The inauguration of this historic site is meant to pay a tribute to the very early experimental physics work of Guglielmo Marconi. Aged only 21, in 1895 he succeeded to establish the first long range electromagnetic wave…
On 17 May 2013, a new EPS Historic Site was inaugurated in Florence, Italy.
The site is the “Hill of Arcetri”, rich in buildings of considerable historical and scientific interest:
The interaction between the journal Accastampato and European Physical Society Young Minds [EPS YM] is an example of how networking activities promoted by the physical societies can be used to take a project from a local to a national scale.
Accastampato is a journal founded in 2010 by students of the Physics Department of La Sapienza University of Roma. Written by students for students, the journal aims to draw attention to the beauty of science, in a friendly and…
The first International Workshop on Technology and Innovation of the European Physical Society is being held at the Ettore Majorana Foundation and Centre for Scientific Culture, in Sicily, on the 21-25 October this year. The topic under discussion will be “Nuclear and subnuclear physics technologies and innovations leading to medical and industrial applications”.
