NMP publishes final 2012 work programme

The 7th Framework Programme for EU Research’s (FP7) Industrial Technologies programme – commonly referred to as NMPNanotechnology and nanosciences, knowledge-based multifunctional Materials and new Production processes and devices. – have published their final work programme for the 2012 call for proposals. NMP promotes excellence, across all industrial sectors, in both new and existing technologies.

European Commission Prize for Women Innovators

A Prize for Women Innovators has been launched by the European Commission at the end of last month. The competition – which aims to highlight the successes of three women who have brought outstanding innovations to the market – is hoped will raise public awareness of the need for more innovation, and for more female entrepreneurs.

There are three cash prizes available to win – 100,000, 50,000 and 25,000 Euros respectively – which will be presented at an award ceremony during the European Commission’s Innovation Convention on 5 December this year…

Horizon 2020 research programme to start 2014

“Horizon 2020 – the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation” will come into force on 1 January 2014, the European Commission has announced. Horizon 2020 – the name of which was selected by a vote in June this year – will replace the FP7 programme when it finishes at the end of 2013.

Scientific information in the digital age consultation

The European Commission is planning to adopt a communication and recommendation, on the access to, and preservation of, digital scientific information. Input is being sought from interested parties, “to feed into the development of possible policy options to be considered”. The deadline for contributions is 9 September 2011.

The EPS will be replying to this consultation, and welcomes input from its members for the preparation of this response. Comments should be sent to the EPS by no later than 31 August 2011…

EC announces 7 billion Euro boost for 2012 R&D

A 7 billion Euro boost for research and innovation for 2012 has been announced by the European Commission (EC) last month. The funding package – which will be the ECs largest yet – is anticipated to promote both growth and new jobs.

“Today, Europe is again showing its commitment to putting research and innovation at the top of the political agenda for growth and jobs,” said Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, who announced the new funding boost. “EU-wide competition for these funds will bring Europe’s best researchers and innovators together to tackle the biggest issues of our time, such as energy, food security, climate change and our ageing population.” …

The Week of Innovative Regions in Europe 2011 (WIRE2011) conference – which was dedicated to possible relationships between research infrastructures and cluster policy, was held between 7-9 June 2011 in Debrecen, Hungary. The event was supported by the Hungarian EU Council Presidency and was jointly organised with the European Commission.

Horizon 2020 voted name of new EC research programme

‘Horizon 2020 – the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation’ will be the name of the new European Commission Research Programme, following a ballot on three shortlisted choices last month. Over 8,300 votes were received in the ECs ‘You Name It’ competition, which was launched on 28 March this year.

ESFRI releases new report on research infrastructures

The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) have released their Strategy Report and Roadmap Update 2010. The chair of ESFRI, Beatrix Vierkorn-Rudolph presented the roadmap to the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, in Brussels on 3 May this year.
