The European Physical Society [EPS] Executive Committee met at the EPS headquarters, in Mulhouse, on 27-28 January 2012. One of the central tasks of this meeting was to make preparations for the upcoming EPS council, and the preceding Forum Physics and Society, which are scheduled to be held at CERN at the end of March this year.
As the first meeting of the new year, the 2011 accounts were discussed, and a budget for 2012 was drawn up. In addition, the committee will prepare a brief statement on the study “Physics and the EU economy”, to be presented…
The Physics Publishing Alliance [PPA], in a joint initiative under the aegis of the European Physical Society [EPS], is bringing together a number of physics journals which have strong scientific and editorial links with European learned societies.
Regular selections of the best articles from the core journals will be made free to access, through the Physics Publishing Alliance Portal for Electronic Review [PPA PER], which will be embedded in the new EPS website…
Dear Readers,
Communication is a vital cornerstone of any efficient organisation. The fact that the European Physical Society [EPS] has now – in addition to its traditional journal, Europhysics News [EPN] – a digital newsletter, e-EPS, is a sure sign that the EPS is both efficient and rooted in today’s digital world. In e-EPS, readers can find up-to-date news from the EPS and beyond, conference announcements and much more…
Nominations are now open for six positions on the board of the European Physical Society Plasma Physics Division. The duties of the Plasma Physics Division board members are “to promote excellent in research by rewarding researchers who have achieved outstanding scientific or technological results; to coordinate activities with other physical societies; to regularly attend board meetings; and to become individual members of the European Physical Society.”
These elections follow on from the appointment, last December, of Sylvie Jacquemot as the upcoming chair…
Dear Readers,
Since its creation, the European Physical Society [EPS] and its members have been at the forefront of physics research and international collaboration. Our reputation is built, first and foremost, on our credibility as physicists. While many EPS initiatives have spurred European, and international, activities and policy initiatives (such as WYP2005, EPL and EMSPS, to cite some examples) the EPS has remained an actor behind the scenes…
A proposal to increase Individual Member fees is being presented by the European Physical Society [EPS] Executive Committee at the 2012 EPS Council. The motion would see an increase in Individual Member fees by 10 per cent, for all respective categories.
The current membership fees have been fixed since 2007. If adopted, the fee increase would apply only to Individual Members, and would become effective in 2013…
The European Physical Society Accelerator Group [EPS-AG] is appealing for sponsors for the 2012 Student Grant Programmes, to send European students to the IPAC’12 conference.
The Student Grant Programmes from the last two years were hugely successful; over 50 students attended IPAC’10, and the combined sponsorship programmes involved with IPAC’11 enabled over 107 students worldwide to attend – around a tenth of the total number of participants…
The Conférences Exceptionelles are organised jointly by the European Physical Society and their host, the Université de Haute Alsace, each spring and autumn. These lectures, which are given in French by an outstanding physicist, address young students from around Mulhouse: both those taking their baccalauréat, in school, and university students in their introductory semesters.
Each lecture covers a topic close to physics, yet with general interest as well; they may come from art, life sciences…
Nominations are now open for the first Landau-Spitzer award for outstanding contributions to plasma physics. The award, which is being given jointly by the American Physical Society and the European Physical Society, celebrates the long-standing collaboration between the societies in the field of plasma physics.
The prizes, which may be given to individuals or teams of up to four people, will be presented at the opening session of the 16th International Congress on Plasma Physics, which is being held in Stockholm on 2 July this year…
The European Physical Society website has undergone a major facelift. Following many suggestions for improvements, a new design has been implemented, with better navigation, a crisp new layout and more information on society activities.
Individual Members will benefit from a new feature, allowing them to indicate their research fields, and upload CVs and publication lists.
The new website will foster the exchange of information among Individual Members, divisions and groups.
The 15th European Physical Society [EPS] General Meeting was held in Wroclaw, Poland, on 27 October last year.
Reports from Luisa Cifarelli, the EPS President; Colin Latimer, the EPS Treasurer; and Martina Knoop, the EPS Secretary were presented.
In addition, Tomasz Dietl gave an overview of ‘Nanospintronics’, and Daniel Esteve presented the work of the European Research Council.
Nicolae-Victor Zamfir is the new chair of the European Physical Society’s Nuclear Physics Division. Zamfir, from Bucharest, took up the role on the 1 January this year.
“I am sure with his scientific reputation and management experience, Victor [will be] an excellent chairman for the next two years,” said Zsolt Fulop, the outgoing chair.
Zamfir, who is the Director General of the National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering in Bucharest…
