Since its establishment in 1968, the European Physical Society [EPS] has held a dual role of learned society and federation of National Member Societies. After 45 years, these Member Societies are 41 and the EPS represents a very large and varied community of physicists. One of the main objectives of the EPS is to give them a coherent voice on matters of common relevance, despite the existence of much educational, scientific, social and geographic diversity.
Along this line, one of the crucial issues to be addressed in today’s evolving European scenario is related to…
Since 2011, the European Physical Society [EPS] has been examining and testing various methods of increasing the number of individual members. On the occasion of some EPS conferences, as for instance the EPS High Energy Physics Division conference, participants have been effectively invited to become EPS individual members. Some EPS member societies, such as the Italian Physical Society [SIF], have been actively encouraging their young members to become at the same time EPS individual members.
Other initiatives will be implemented in 2013…
The European Physical Society’s Executive Committee [EPS ExCom] met on 1-2 February 2013 in the beautiful venue of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts in Barcelona, Spain. The ExCom was kindly and warmly welcomed by the president of the Academy, Ramon Pascual de Sans, EPS individual member since 1970!
Important points in the agenda of the meeting were, in particular, the EPS position paper on Horizon 2020 (see Editorial in this issue), the report commissioned by EPS to CEBR on the importance of physics to the economies…
2013 marks the 45th anniversary of the European Physical Society [EPS], sealing the maturity of our Society.
The EPS was founded in 1968 as “a demonstration of the determination of scientists to collaborate as closely as possible in order to further strengthen the European Cultural unity”. Since then the EPS has grown, both in dimensions and objectives.
In the last two years, following the guidelines of its strategy plan, the EPS has been developing a number of…
The EPS Technology and Innovation Group [TIG] held a three-day workshop, focusing on the ongoing and projected R&D and technological innovations in physics research and its spin-offs to society. This workshop is a result of the renewed commitment of the EPS to study the relationship between physics research and innovation and technology.
The EPS-TIG workshop was organised by the EPS TIG Chairman, Horst Wenninger and by Manjit Dosanjh, CERN’s Life Sciences Advisor in CERN’s Knowledge Transfer [KT] Group and member of the TIG…
The European Physical Society [EPS], the Centro di Cultura Scientifica “Alessandro Volta” and Edison S.p.A. are proud to announce the award of the 2012 EPS Edison Volta Prize for outstanding contributions to physics to:
What a nice initiative from the EuCheMS president Ulrich Schubert to invite me to participate in the General Assembly of the European Association for Chemical and Molecular Sciences. This took place on 11-12 October 2012 in Dublin, in the beautiful library of the Irish Royal Academy.
Two round table dicussions were organized, on the following items:
- What are the European needs for Member Societies
- Combining forces for Horizon 2020…
Dear Readers,
Action Committees are established by the European Physical Society [EPS] Executive Committee to advise in specific areas and undertake the actual organisation of EPS actions.
Following the EPS Strategy Plan 2010+, the Executive Committee is now starting a discussion to renew and revive the Action Committees: proposing modifications, if appropriate, to their composition…
A new prize for Research in Laser Science and Applications has been launched by the Quantum Electronics & Optics Division [QEOD] of the European Physical Society [EPS]. The award – which is to be given biennially – will recognise recent excellent research, by up to three individuals, in the field of laser science and its application.
The award will be presented to its winner(s) during a prize ceremony at the 6th EPS Europhoton Conference on “Solid-State, Fibre and Waveguide Coherent Light Sources”, which is to be held in 2014…
The first course of the Joint EPS-SIF International School on Energy – on “New strategies for energy generation, conversion and storage” – was held between 30 July and 4 August this year in Varenna, Italy. The school was attended by 70 participants – both lecturers, observers and students – from 18 different home countries.
The week-long course offered basic, detailed lectures on energy and related technologies, complemented by topical seminars on the most to-date developments in such topics as…
Dear Readers,
We physicists are positive that physics is the most important thing in life. We take for granted the notion that without the achievements of physics, industry, technology and even human life itself would be less productive.
We have to face the fact, however, that we are not alone. It is hard to find physicists amongst the decision makers at government levels, and even scientific policy makers may not consider physics as important as we do…
The European Physical Society [EPS] Quantum Electronics and Optics Division has established two new prizes this month: the EPS Prize for Research into the Science of Light and the EPS Prize for Research in Laser Science and Applications.
The EPS Prize for Research in Laser Science and Applications is awarded in recognition of recent work – by no more than three individuals – which displays scientific excellence in the field of laser science, and its and application, in its broadest sense…
