Editorial – Nuclear physics for cultural heritage

A topical review by the Nuclear Physics Division of the European Physical Society, edited by Anna Macková, Douglas MacGregor, Faiçal Azaiez, Johan Nyberg, and Eli Piasetzky.

Nuclear physics applications in medicine and energy are well known and widely reported. Less well known are the many important nuclear and related techniques used for the study, characterization, assessment and preservation of cultural heritage. There has been enormous progress in this field in recent years and the current review aims to provide the public with a popular and accessible account of this work.

Ulf-G. Meißner wins the 2016 EPS Lise Meitner Prize

The Lise Meitner Prize is awarded biennially by the European Physical Society (EPS) for outstanding work in the fields of experimental, theoretical or applied nuclear science.

The 2016 Prize Laureate is: Prof. Ulf-G. Meißner, Universität Bonn and Forschungszentrum in Jülich, Germany

The Highest French civil award for Sydney Galès

The highest French civil award “Chevalier de la legion d’honneur” was conferred on Sydney Galès for his lifelong excellent achievements in science and his great service to the community. He received the honour on November 9, 2015 from the French secretary of state for Higher education and research. The ceremony took place at the ‘Frederic and Irène Joliot-Curie’ auditorium of the institute of Nuclear Physics of Orsay (IPN-Orsay) in  the presence of a large number of French, European and Japanese colleagues. It was an excellent opportunity to reminisce about and contemplate Sydney’s contributions to science and to the community of Nuclear Physics in Europe and worldwide.

Editorial – The European Strategy for Nuclear Science: NuPECC gets help from the Nuclear Physics Division

The Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee [NuPECC] has just started the process for the preparation of a new Long Range Plan (LRP) for nuclear science in Europe. A new European strategy document is indeed needed since the last one dates from 2010 and because these documents are important references for research in the field over a period of 5-7 years.

Call for the “Lise Meitner Prize” of the EPS Nuclear Physics Division

The Nuclear Physics Division [NPD] of the EPS supports the advancement and the dissemination of knowledge in nuclear physics. In this respect the NPD regularly awards some of Europe’s most prestigious prizes. Among these is the “Lise Meitner Prize”, named after the famous Austrian physicist who worked on radioactivity and nuclear physics. Nominations are now open for the Lise Meitner Prize in 2016. The prize, awarded to one or several experienced scientists, recognises outstanding work in the fields of experimental, theoretical or applied nuclear science. Particular consideration will be given to scientific activities that represent the core of the nuclear science in Europe.

EPS Young Minds Session at EuNPC

In the early stage of their training, young researchers need to learn a lot of skills for their future career. In order to assist with these challenges, the EPS Young Mind Project organised a special session at the European Nuclear Physics Conference, which took place in September in Groningen (NL). In this session invited speakers gave overview talks to train young scientists for their professional knowledge as well as in promoting science.
An introduction of the Young Minds Project was given by Ulrike Ritzmann highlighting the fast growth of the project in the last five years and the variety of different actions of the self-organised sections. More than 30 self-organised sections in Europe engage in outreach activities, seminars and workshops to promote science and to broaden the knowledge in science and beyond train their professional skills.

EPS NPD 2015

The European Physical Society Conference on Nuclear Physics is one of the major International Conferences that reviews the field of nuclear physics every third year. The first two Conferences were held in Bochum (2009) and in Bucharest (2012), with 374 participants from 29 countries in the last one.
In 2015 the Third European Nuclear Physics Conference will take place in Groningen, Netherlands from August 31 to September 4, 2015.
