The 2019 EPS Fellows were named and the EPS Gero Thomas Medal was attributed during the EPS Council in Split.
Petra Rudolf is the next EPS President-elect. She will take up office as the President of EPS in April 2019, when the term of the current President, Rüdiger Voss, comes to an end.
The EPS Council meeting that took place on 6-7 April 2018 elected the members of the Executive Committee as well as the next EPS President-elect.
The EPS Council 2017 took place from 31st March to 1st April in Erlangen, Germany.
Hosted in the splendid building of the Max-Planck Institute for the Science of Light [MPI], the meeting gathered together more than 60 members, representatives of the main European Physical Societies, as well as numerous Associate Members of the Society.
The European Physical Society [EPS] is pleased to announce that Rüdiger Voss has been elected as the next EPS President-elect. He will take up office as the President of EPS in April 2017, when the term of the current President, Christophe Rossel comes to an end.
EPS Members can recognise individuals whose achievements in physics, whether in research, industry or education and/or through commitment to the SOCIETY and award them the distinction of a Fellow on the European Physical Society. In 2016, EPS Council welcomed the following individuals as EPS Fellows.
Luc Bergé French Commission for Atomic Energy, CEA, Paris, FR, for his outstanding theoretical contributions to the wave propagation in nonlinear media and for his service to the European Physical Society.
Over 80 participants attended the EPS Council meeting which was held on the campus of the Université de Hate Alsace, in Mulhouse (FR). EPS Council is the opportunity for the EPS Divisions and Groups, member Societies and Action Committees to meet, and share information on the development of the EPS.
At the EPS Council meeting, which took place on 27-28 March in Bad Honnef (DE), a round table was organised on the topic of “Influencing European Commission Science Policy”. The round table attracted the attention of the participants and triggered interesting discussions. The scientific and industrial communities need to provide their viewpoints to science policy makers. EPS needs to define its own strategy and continue its collaborations with other learned societies and organisations representing different scientific fields to speak with a coherent voice in the EU.
The presentations at the round table were centred on these issues with specific inputs related to the experience of the organization (or company) represented by the speaker.
The annual meeting of the EPS Council took place on 27-28 March 2015 at the Physik Zentrum in Bad Honnef, Germany. It was attended by around 50 delegates, representing EPS Member Societies, Associate Members, Individual members, Divisions, Groups and Committees.
The review of the activities of the EPS in 2014 demonstrated that it is active and lively in federating the European Physics Community. The EPS also contributed to many policy debates throughout the year.
The Council of the European Physical Society met at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy on 4-5 April 2014. Over the two day meeting, Council delegates listened to presentations summarising the activity of the EPS in 2013, as well as programmed activities in 2014 and beyond.

For its January meeting, the EPS Executive Committee met at The Institute of Physics [IOP] premises, Portland Place, London, on the same day as the IOP council. During a joint lunch, the EPS president gave a short overview of EPS’s activities to the Council and there were fruitful discussions between IOP Council and EPS Executive Committee members.
