The Executive Committee of the European Physical society met in Mulhouse, France, on 24 June 2014. This was the first meeting after the elections at Council. In addition to appointing officers, the Executive Committee discussed better communication with Member Societies and Divisions and Groups. Each Member of the Executive Committee acts as a privileged contact to a set of Member Societies and Divisions and Groups.
Among the other items on the agenda were EPS statements, and EPS Action Committees. EPS Members can access summary of the Executive Committee Meeting on the EPS website…
The European Commission has opened a consultation on “Science 2.0″. A briefing document has been prepared describing what the European Commission means by Science 2.0, as well as introducing the issues. The consultation is open to all interested parties, and closes on 30 September 2014.
Digital technologies, many of them driven by physics research, have and are changing the way research is conducted and organised. The European Commission, through this consultation, is asking key stakeholders (universities, research funders, libraries, researchers, publishers, businesses) to provide their input…
To commemorate the United Nations proclamation of the International Year of Light 2015, the Centro di Cultura Scientifica “Alessandro Volta”, EDISON S.p.A. and the European Physical Society [EPS] are delighted to announce an exceptional call for nominations for the EPS Edison Volta Prize, which will be awarded during 2015 during a special ceremony during the Festival of Light in Como, Italy.
The award – intended to promote excellence in research – will be given in recognition of outstanding research and achievements in physics. The EPS Edison Volta Prize is given either to individuals or…
The European Physical Society [EPS] Prize for Research into the Science of Light is awarded on behalf of the EPS through its Quantum Electronics & Optics Division [QEOD]. The prize is awarded every 2 years in recognition of recent work by one or more individuals (no more than three) for scientific excellence in the area of electromagnetic science in its broadest sense, across the entire spectrum of electromagnetic waves.
The first Prize for Research into the Science of Light was awarded during Nanometa 2013 on 3 January 2013 in Seefeld. Austria, to Philip StJ Russell, from the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light…
In response to the decision at 2014 Council to save production costs and to insure that the magazine remains spread widely in Europe, it was agreed to change the publication frequency of Europhysics News.
In 2014 and 2015, Europhysics News will move from 6 printed issues to 5 printed issues. In this way we hope to satisfy the interests of authors and advertisers and achieve the sustainability of the publication.
Europhysics News constantly evolves to better fit the needs and expectations of the readers. The fifth issue will be larger (32 + 16 pages) than the other issues to accommodate extra features and…
The workshop “Widening participation of CEI Countries in the EU Research Programs” – Training and Research in Physics Workshop – was held in Bucharest, Romania, from 25 to 27 May 2014. It was the first working meeting of the consortium, following two preparatory sessions held in Venice and Trieste. At least 2 other workshops will be held in the frame of the project aiming to promote the integration of the physics community in Central and South-Eastern European countries into the ERA.
The project was proposed by a consortium consisting of the European Physical Society and…
The 5th International Particle Accelerator Conference [IPAC'14] took place in Dresden, Germany from 15-20 June 2014. The conference brought together 1,200 accelerator scientists and engineers from around the world to discuss the latest developments in a field that underpins areas of research from high-energy physics to structural biology. As a truly international conference series, the venue for IPAC moves between Asia, Europe and North America on a three-year cycle. Dresden provided a wonderful location for IPAC’14, the second conference in the series to be held in Europe. The programme covered all aspects of accelerator science…
In June 2014, representatives of the EPS Young Minds sections were invited to present and discuss their activities at the 3rd Young Minds Leadership Meeting. These activities range from colloquia presenting research in physics to visits of local industry to a variety of activities sharing the fascination for physics with the public.
EPS Young Minds was created in 2010 to connect young scientists around Europe and support them by training their communication and scientific skills. The goal is to give them the opportunity to organise various events and create a European wide network of young researchers. At present…

The 6th International Conference “Charged and Neutral Particles Channeling Phenomena” [Channeling 2014] will be held in Capri, Italy, from 5-10 October 2014.
Channeling 2014 is the opportunity for a wide interdisciplinary community to gain information about present and future research projects in the field of relativistic/non-relativistic beams and various radiations interaction in solids as well as radiation flux propagation in micro- and nanochannel structures. In particular, this conference series has proven its importance both for experts and for young scientists with an interest in…
The International Conference on Science and Technology for FAIR in Europe 2014 will be held in Worms, Germany, from 13-17 October 2014.
FAIR is an international accelerator facility for the research with antiprotons and ions. It is ready to be built within the coming years near Darmstadt in Hesse, Germany. Further information is available on the FAIR website.
The scientific landscape has evolved in all fields of FAIR physics and it is high time…
