Reinhard Kienberger is awarded the EPS QEOD Prize for Research in Laser Science and Applications

The Quantum Electronics and Optics Division [QEOD] board is delighted to announce that Prof. Reinhard Kienberger has been elected the winner of the 2016 prize for ‘Research in Laser Science and Applications’ for his seminal contributions to establishing the basic techniques for attosecond science with laser-based as well as accelerator-based sources. The prize will be awarded at the forthcoming Europhoton conference on Solid-State, Fibre and Waveguide Coherent Light Source to be held in Vienna, Austria from 21-26 August, 2016.

EPS Emmy Noether Distinction: nominate an outstanding physicist

In 2013, the European Physical Society [EPS] launched the Emmy Noether Distinction to recognise noteworthy women physicists.

Emmy Noether was an influential theoretical physicist, and a role model for future generations of physicists. The laureates of the Emmy Noether Distinction are chosen for their capacity to inspire the next generation of scientists, and especially encourage women to handle careers in physics.

The 2016 Hermann Weyl Prize has been awarded to Vasily Pestun of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (France) for his ground breaking results in the study of supersymmetric gauge theories, such as his ingenious computation of partition functions that led to the discovery of rich connections between four-dimensional and two-dimensional quantum field theories.

The Highest French civil award for Sydney Galès

The highest French civil award “Chevalier de la legion d’honneur” was conferred on Sydney Galès for his lifelong excellent achievements in science and his great service to the community. He received the honour on November 9, 2015 from the French secretary of state for Higher education and research. The ceremony took place at the ‘Frederic and Irène Joliot-Curie’ auditorium of the institute of Nuclear Physics of Orsay (IPN-Orsay) in  the presence of a large number of French, European and Japanese colleagues. It was an excellent opportunity to reminisce about and contemplate Sydney’s contributions to science and to the community of Nuclear Physics in Europe and worldwide.
