The Norwegian Physicist Meeting will be held in Tromsø, Norway, from 7-9 August 2017. It will be organised by the Norwegian Physical Society in collaboration with the Department of Physics and Technology at UiT, The Arctic University of Norway.
Young Minds (YM) is an excellent opportunity for physics students to develop skills and contacts that will be useful in their careers. Public engagement through the activities in the YM sections demonstrates the importance of dialog, for the public to appreciate the work done by researchers, and for researchers to share their passion for science. Each YM section is managed by volunteers, planning activities, balancing budgets, organising events… This experience will make Young Minds members more effective leaders. With sections and members all over Europe, YM provides a network of motivated young physicists to share ideas, and best practice.
The 2017 EPS High Energy and Particle Physics Division prizes have been announced. The six winners will be presented during the EPS HEP2017 conference, in Venice, from 5-12 July. The prize ceremony is scheduled on 10 July.
The European Physical Society is delighted to announce the 2017 winners of its two most prestigious prizes in Quantum Electronics and Optics. These prizes, awarded only once every two years, recognise the highest level of achievements in fundamental and applied research in optical physics. The awards will be presented in a special Plenary Ceremony on Tuesday, June 27, 2017 during the Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics Europe (CLEO®/Europe) and the European Quantum Electronics Conference (EQEC), to be held in Munich, Germany.
The cooperation between EPS and the South-Eastern European Network in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics (SEENET-MTP) was established almost a decade ago and was further reinforced at the Kick-off Meeting of the EPS Committee of European Integration (EPS-CEI) during the Balkan Workshop BW2013 (Vrnjačka Banja, Serbia, 2013).
The European Physical Journal (EPJ) consists of a series of high-quality peer-reviewed journals (8 traditional and 8 open access) covering the whole spectrum of pure and applied physics and related interdisciplinary subjects. EPJ also includes the EPJ Web of Conferences and maintains editorial transfer coordination with EPL.
On May 23rd 2017 took place in Szeged, in the presence of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, the Opening Ceremony of ELI-ALPS.
The 3rd meeting of the worldwide Future Circular Collider (FCC week 2017) brought together more than 500 leading minds in engineering and science from 147 institutes to discuss the progress of the present study and lay the foundations for the FCC design report. The increasing numbers reflect the attractiveness of the project and the diversity of the scientific challenges offered by this large-scale research infrastructure.
The ALBA Open Day, organised every year by the ALBA Synchrotron, was again a full success. From 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. more than 2,000 people visited ALBA’s facilities to have a better knowledge of its characteristic and functions.
The University of Naples Federico II (UNINA) hosted the 6th Young Minds Leadership Meeting (12-13 May 2017) and the 15th Young Minds Action Committee Meeting (11 May 2017).
The meeting was organised by the Physics and Optics Naples Young Students (PONYS), the local European Physical Society (EPS) section, and the Young Minds Action Committee, and was supported by EPS, the Physics Department of Naples University Federico II, the Italian Physical Society (SIF), the local section of the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN Napoli), and the Institute of Applied Sciences and Intelligent Systems of the National Research Council (CNR-ISASI).
Paris, France — Following the highly successful International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015, the Executive Board of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has endorsed an annual International Day of Light. The purpose of an International Day of Light will be to provide an annual focal point for the appreciation of the role that light plays in the lives of the citizens of the world in areas of science, culture, education, sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications and energy. The broad theme of light will allow many different sectors of society to participate in activities around the world to raise awareness of science and technology, art and culture, and their importance in achieving the goals of UNESCO — education, equality and peace.
