In a consultation process kicked off in 2015, the ESPD / EPS decided in 2016 to implement three Division Prizes, foreseen by its statutes and bylaws since its establishment in 2008: a Senior Prize, presented to a distinguished senior solar scientist for a life-long prolific career or scholarship, an Early Career Prize, presented to a solar scientist with an outstanding research track record up to four years after the completion of his / her PhD Thesis and a PhD Thesis Prize, presented to a young researcher who achieved significant doctoral work and a successful PhD Thesis completion over the previous calendar year. The PhD Thesis and Early Career Prizes are awarded annually, while the Senior Prize is triennial.
The 10th Liquid Matter Conference of the Liquid Physics Section of EPS – CMD, held from July 17th through 21st 2017 in sunny and friendly Ljubljana (Slovenia) will go down as one of the most successful editions of the Liquid Matter Conferences.
A team of scientists has used microwaves to unravel the exact structure of a tiny molecular motor. The nano-machine consists of just a single molecule, made up of 27 carbon and 20 hydrogen atoms (C27H20). Like a macroscopic motor it has a stator and a rotor, connected by an axle. The analysis reveals just how the individual parts of the motor are constructed and arranged with respect to each other. The team led by DESY Leading Scientist Melanie Schnell reports the results in the journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition.
EDP Sciences, a learned society owned publisher, has announced the launch of a new multi- and inter-disciplinary Open Access journal: 4open.
EuroScience and the ESOF Supervisory Board are proud to announce that the EuroScience Open Forum 2020 will be hosted from 4 to 10 July 2020 in Trieste, Italy, and that ESOF 2022 will be organized by Leiden/The Hague, The Netherlands, in July 2022. We received two impressive and solid full bids from Trieste and Leiden/The Hague, and we wish to recognize both cities’ credentials to become the European City of Science in 2020, respectively 2022.
The Institute for Photonics Sciences (ICFO) in Barcelona, Spain has announced that calls are open for the third edition of program established by the Women for Africa Foundation.
I have read this letter and think that the German Physical Society is doing a noble and right thing for the development of science, rendering concrete assistance to those Ukrainian colleagues who found themselves in a difficult situation because of the war in the Donbass.

The Award for Secondary School Teaching is granted every two years to a high school teacher for a specific contribution to teaching, in particular one that might be applicable in a variety of countries. “Teaching” is interpreted broadly and can include activities that encourage students to study physics or improve their access to physics. Nominations are made by the National Physical Societies.
During May 15 – 19, 2017, the first China-Europe Solar Physics Meeting (CESPM-1) was successfully organised in the city of Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. The European Solar Physics Division (ESPD), on behalf of the entire European solar physics community, strongly endorsed and advocated for this gathering. Contributing to the CESPM-1 organisation, the ESPD was also delighted to participate in its deliberations.
