The workshop “Integrating Access to Pan-European Research Infrastructures in Central and Eastern Europe” [INARIE] took place in Debrecen, Hungary from 30 November to 2 December 2015. INARIE was organised by the Institute for Nuclear Research (Atomki), Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Wigner Research Centre for Physics, Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the European Physical Society in frames of the International Year of Light. The workshop was part of the INARIE project of the EPS Committee of European Integration (EPS-CEI) and concluded a series of previous EPS-CEI workshops in Bucharest, Sofia and Trieste.

Advanced School in Soft Condensed Matter ‘Solutions in the Spring’

The aim of this School is to provide a comprehensive foundation for researchers in the field of soft matter liquids and complex fluids. The lectures will introduce key topics of current interest together with the theoretical, experimental and computer simulation approaches used to address them. The School is directed towards postgraduate students from a wide range of backgrounds including physics, chemistry, chemical engineering and biophysics and abstract submissions were recently opened.

Editorial – The European Strategy for Nuclear Science: NuPECC gets help from the Nuclear Physics Division

The Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee [NuPECC] has just started the process for the preparation of a new Long Range Plan (LRP) for nuclear science in Europe. A new European strategy document is indeed needed since the last one dates from 2010 and because these documents are important references for research in the field over a period of 5-7 years.

The construction of the KM3NeT neutrino telescope has begun

In December 2015, scientists and engineers started the installation of KM3NeT.. Once completed, it will be the largest neutrino detector in the Northern Hemisphere. Located in the depths of the Mediterranean Sea, the telescope will be used to study the fundamental properties of neutrinos and map the high-energy cosmic neutrinos emanating from extreme cataclysmic events in the Universe.
