The International Symposium on Laser Physics and Spectroscopy, held on 11-12 November 2019 at the Institute of Spectroscopy of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISAN) in Troitsk near Moscow, was an exceptional event, organised specifically to celebrate the 80th jubilee of Vladilen Letokhov, former vice-director for research of this institute.
Suzdal, an ancient small city in Russia 260 km away from Moscow, hosted on August 6-11 the 13th International Conference on “Hole Burning, Single Molecules, and Related Spectroscopies: Science and Applications” (HBSM-2018), which was organised in Russia for the first time.
The Institute of Spectroscopy of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ISAN), which is located in science city Troitsk, Moscow, was inaugurated as an Historic Site of the European Physical Society (EPS). The EPS President, Rüdiger Voss and the EPS Secretary General, David Lee attended the ceremony, which was held on June 20, 2018, at the 50th jubilee of the ISAN.
The 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Serge Haroche (College de France and Ecole Normale Superieure, Paris, France) and David J. Wineland (National Institute of Standards and Technology [NIST] and University of Colorado, Boulder, USA) for the development of “ground-breaking experimental methods that enable measuring and manipulation of individual quantum systems”.
