The LIGHT2015 Project -ccordinated by the EPS – was present at the LASER World of PHOTONICS Congress and Trade Fair 2015 that was held in Munich from 21 to 25 June supporting a high-profile event and organizing several events to promote careers and entrepreneurship in Photonics.

iSPEX-EU: A European-wide Citizen Science Campaign for the Measurement of Aerosols with Smartphones
As part of the LIGHT2015 project, coordinated by the European Physical Society, Leiden Observatory is organising a pilot European-wide Citizen Science campaign for the measurement of aerosols with iSPEX, a low-cost add-on and corresponding app for the iPhone. The campaign will run in over 10 major cities across Europe from 1-28 September 2015. With an anticipated 15,000 participants, this campaign therefore is a first step towards a worldwide network of citizen scientists who can provide air quality observations.

The International Year of Light in Europe 2015 [LIGHT2015] – funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme – is a high impact EU-wide outreach and education initiative that aims to promote the importance of photonics to young people, entrepreneurs and the general public during the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies [IYL 2015]. The project, coordinated by the European Physical Society [EPS], will leverage the tremendous visibility of IYL 2015 to ensure that the public in all member states of the EU understands and appreciates the importance that photonics has for society.

Every year many PhD graduates in STEM fields around Europe enter the academic market hoping to pursue a scientific career that finally leads to a secure permanent position. However, most of them will not make it. The reality is that there are not many of those positions and every step of a research career leads to an even narrower bottleneck. During the past years, all around Europe, the employment security of researchers is threatened by cuts in national research budgets as well as an unfair standardised recruitment system based on publications that often favours quantity over quality. WEGA – Forty-year-old fusion experiment to cross the Atlantic

The WEGA fusion device at Max Planck Institute of Plasma Physics [IPP] in Greifswald, Germany, is being handed over to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, United States, after 13 years of successful work. WEGA is making room for the Wendelstein 7-X large-scale device, which is currently in development at IPP and will be completed in 2015.
