iSPEX-EU: A European-wide Citizen Science Campaign for the Measurement of Aerosols with Smartphones
As part of the LIGHT2015 project, coordinated by the European Physical Society, Leiden Observatory is organising a pilot European-wide Citizen Science campaign for the measurement of aerosols with iSPEX, a low-cost add-on and corresponding app for the iPhone. The campaign will run in over 10 major cities across Europe from 1-28 September 2015. With an anticipated 15,000 participants, this campaign therefore is a first step towards a worldwide network of citizen scientists who can provide air quality observations.
The International Year of Light in Europe 2015 [LIGHT2015] – funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme – is a high impact EU-wide outreach and education initiative that aims to promote the importance of photonics to young people, entrepreneurs and the general public during the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies [IYL 2015]. The project, coordinated by the European Physical Society [EPS], will leverage the tremendous visibility of IYL 2015 to ensure that the public in all member states of the EU understands and appreciates the importance that photonics has for society.
The IYL 2015 Opening Ceremony
The Opening Ceremony of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies 2015. will take place at the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, on 19-20 January 2015. It will introduce all the key themes of the year, and will aim to inspire activities and events worldwide for the following 12 months. After high-level opening addresses by international political leaders and diplomats, a series of keynote lectures by Nobel Laureates, symposia and round-tables will cover areas of basic science, innovative lighting solutions for society, light pollution, emerging trends in photonics, …
Every year many PhD graduates in STEM fields around Europe enter the academic market hoping to pursue a scientific career that finally leads to a secure permanent position. However, most of them will not make it. The reality is that there are not many of those positions and every step of a research career leads to an even narrower bottleneck. During the past years, all around Europe, the employment security of researchers is threatened by cuts in national research budgets as well as an unfair standardised recruitment system based on publications that often favours quantity over quality. The young researchers become casualties of the academic system and I am one of those victims …
Ibn Al-Haytham to be a focus of the International Year of Light through partnering with 1001 Inventions The International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies (IYL 2015) is delighted to welcome as a Founding Partner the award-winning educational organisation 1001 Inventions. British-based 1001 Inventions has the specific mission to raise awareness of the contributions to science, technology and culture from the Golden Age of Muslim Civilisation, and will play a key role during IYL2015 to promote and celebrate the 10th century pioneer Ibn Al-Haytham. Ibn Al-Haytham’s seminal work on optics ‘Kitab al-Manazir (The Book of Optics)’ was written around …
The WEGA fusion device at Max Planck Institute of Plasma Physics [IPP] in Greifswald, Germany, is being handed over to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, United States, after 13 years of successful work. WEGA is making room for the Wendelstein 7-X large-scale device, which is currently in development at IPP and will be completed in 2015.
Under the name “Wendelstein Experiment in Grenoble for the Application of Radio Frequency Heating”, this small fusion device was commissioned in 1975 as a joint German-French-Belgian project. Scientists from IPP at Garching and…
