ECOC2016: CLEO/Europe Focus Meeting
Following on from successful conferences held since 2006, the European Physical Society and CLEO®/Europe-EQEC in collaboration with the Chairs of ECOC 2016 are delighted to announce the organisation of a special CLEO Focus Meeting on Fundamental Photonics for Future Telecommunications, to be held as part of ECOC 2016 from 18-22 September 2016 in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Editorial – The light shines on!
The International Year of Light Closing Ceremony took place in Mexico from 4-7 February 2016, bringing together diplomats and decision-makers, Nobel laureates, and science and industry leaders to both review the many successes of the International Year, as well as to look at concrete steps to ensure a lasting impact and legacy.
I had the great honour in the Opening Session to provide an overview of the year’s activities, and in preparing for this in January, it was remarkable to learn just how much had been achieved.
Editorial – Twitter Physics!
Twitter has over 280 million active users who send around 500 million tweets a day. These are impressive statistics, and we all hear regularly of some news or controversy that starts and spreads via a tweet. Given the extensive reach of the Twitter network, one would think that it might be useful for serious science. However, most scientists tend to think that Twitter is at best not especially relevant or indeed that it’s a complete waste of time! That said, there are a number of high profile scientists (e.g. Brian Cox, Neil de Grasse Tyson) and research institutes (e.g. CERN, NASA) with over a million followers, so there are clearly many people who wish to hear what scientists have to say.
2015 EPS Edison Volta Prize goes to ESA’s Planck Mission team
The European Physical Society [EPS], the Centro di Cultura Scientifica Alessandro Volta and Edison S.p.A. are delighted to announce the award of the 2015 EPS Edison Volta Prize for outstanding contributions to physics to the three principal scientific leaders of the European Space Agency’s [ESA] Planck Mission:
EPS letter to the president of the European Commission on the re-allocation of H2020 funds
The European Physical Society [EPS] has written a letter to the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, expressing concern over the re-allocation of funds from the Horizon 2020 budget.
Research and development are key drivers of prosperity, and reducing Europe’s capacity to finance frontier research jeopardizes its ability to develop the future technology that will be important for economic growth, job creation, and addressing societal challenges.
Editorial – Light is Here!
From an idea hatched back in 2009, the International Year of Light 2015 has now arrived in full force! What an amazing two days it was in Paris at UNESCO HQ at the Opening Ceremony, where the international scientific community came together with diplomats and politicians, architects and designers, leading companies in light technologies, representatives from the European Commission, artists and performers, students, volunteers and many more.
Editorial – Reflections on a fantastic year for EPS
Sometimes we are so busy working on tasks at hand that we forget to look backwards to see how much we have achieved. In a sense, this is exactly the way it should be, because looking forward keeps us focused on moving in new directions! But in this last editorial of 2014, it’s perhaps the right time to go through exactly what EPS has achieved concretely over the last 12 months.

I had the great privilege to be asked to attend the 50th Anniversary of the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste which was held over 5-9 October 2014. This was a wonderful experience for many reasons.
Of course, ICTP is well-known as a world hub of theoretical physics and a leading center, but I had an especially personal reason to feel honoured with this invitation. Prize for Research into the Science of Light call
The European Physical Society [EPS] Prize for Research into the Science of Light is awarded on behalf of the EPS through its Quantum Electronics & Optics Division [QEOD]. The prize is awarded every 2 years in recognition of recent work by one or more individuals (no more than three) for scientific excellence in the area of electromagnetic science in its broadest sense, across the entire spectrum of electromagnetic waves.
