Altarelli and Parisi given prestigious physics awards

The European Physical Society would like to congratulate Guido Altarelli and Giorgo Parisi, who have recently been presented with prestigious awards for their work in the field of physics.

Altarelli – alongside Tornbjorn Sjøstrand and Bryan Webber – is one of the recipients of the 2012 J.J. Sakurai Prize for Theoretical Particle Physics, which is given by the American Physical Society. He is being presented the award for his “key ideas leading to the detailed confirmation of the Standard Model of particle physics, enabling high energy experiments to extract precise information about quantum chromodynamics, electroweak interactions and possible new physics…”

CERN and Ars Electronica first digital art resident

The first Prix Ars Electronica Collide@CERN was awarded to Julius Von Bismarck, the noted German artist, at CERN, Geneva, on 6 December 2011. Winning 3 months as artist in residence at CERN and Ars Electronica, along with 10,000 Euros in prize money, Von Bismarck – a growing name in the artistic community – is known for taking inspiration for his from philosophic and scientific ideas.

The jury reportedly chose him for his ability to playfully combine the arts and the sciences, and “his proposal and work which manipulates and criticises our notions of reality in unpredictable ways, often with inventive use of video…”

European Physical Society Physics Education Division

Since 2000, the European Physical Society’s Physics Education Division has been contributing to awareness of the relevance of physics in everyday culture, to interaction amongst schools and universities and to a better quality of physics teaching at all levels.

Nominations for 2012 Kavli Prizes open

Nominations have opened for candidates for the 2012 Kavli Prizes, which are given for outstanding research in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience. The deadline for nominations is 1 December, 2011.

Each winner, in the three fields covered, will receive gold medal, a scroll and prize money to the sum of $1,000,000. The prize winners will be announced in June next year, with the award ceremony taking place in Oslo, Norway, on 4 September 2012…

McBean: International Council for Science president-elect

The International Council for Science [ICSU] appointed Gordon McBean president-elect during their General Assembly in Rome, Italy, which was held between 24 September and 1 October this year.

McBean, a geography and political science professor at the University of Western Ontario, is a noted expert in the fields of climate change and risk reduction. A fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, he currently also serves as the chair of the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences and the director of Western’s Policy Studies Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction…

EGO-ICRR gravitational wave meeting

A meeting between the European Gravitational Observatory [EGO] and the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research [ICRR], on the topic of gravitational wave research, was held at the University of Tokyo’s Kashiwa campus on 4-5 October this year.

IHEP appoints Wang Yifang as new institute director

The Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has appointed Wang Yifang as their new director. The decision was announced during a meeting held at the institute on the 24 October.

The Institute of High Energy Physics [IHEP] is the biggest basic science research centre in China.
