Bart van Tiggelen has been appointed as the new Editor-in-Chief of EPL, a global letters journal owned and published by a consortium of 17 national physical societies in Europe under the umbrella of the European Physical Society. He started his term in January 2018, taking over from Giorgio Benedek.
September 2017 – the island of Antikythera is under the spotlights again.
Revealed to the world at the beginning of the 20th century, the area saw a Greek ship sink more than 2,000 years ago. Among the luxury goods conveyed was an unusual object named after the island: the Antikythera Mechanism. This instrument made of a complex association of gears is the first astronomical device known in the world.
The EPS Council 2017 took place from 31st March to 1st April in Erlangen, Germany.
Hosted in the splendid building of the Max-Planck Institute for the Science of Light [MPI], the meeting gathered together more than 60 members, representatives of the main European Physical Societies, as well as numerous Associate Members of the Society.
In 2015, the International Year of Light (IYL2015) encountered a big success in France. Hundreds of events organised through the country touched thousands of people and saw the emergence of a community driven by projects involving light.
The 2nd International Conference on the History of Physics took place in Pöllau, Austria, from 4-6 September 2016. During the event, Yanis Bitsakis, historian of sciences and member of the Antikythera Mechanism Research Project, presented this extraordinary device and the results recently released.
The Council of the European Physical Society, held in Mulhouse on 1-2 April 2016, welcomed a round-table on the theme “Physics for Development”. Several associations and organisations were invited to present their projects: Sunshine4Palestine and Liter of Light, as well as the Basic Science Programme at UNESCO, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics [ICTP] and the International Astronomical Union [IAU].
