Many of Europe’s leading research centres and corporations are Associate Members of the European Physical Society [EPS]. Contributions from Associate Members are used to sponsor prestigious prizes, such as the EPS Edison Volta Prize for outstanding contributions to physics. The EPS Technology and Innovation Group actively encourages Associate Members to take part in technology foresight seminars. As Associate Members, research centres, corporations and universities contribute to EPS activities in fields including education, communication and publication. The EPS is pleased to welcome Edison SpA, Europe’s oldest, and Italy’s largest electric company as…
The Cyprus Physicists Society [CPS] was presented at EPS Council 2013 as a possible new – the 42nd – Member Society of the EPS.
The CPS president, Dr. Manolis Lioudadkis illustrated the history, membership and activities of this small society. With around 300 members, mostly pre-university teachers, the CPS is engaged in many education and outreach programmes, such as F1 for schools and the International Physics Olympiads…

The “Science and Technology Advisory Council” will advise European Commission President J.M. Barroso directly on “how to create the proper environment for innovation by shaping a European society that embraces science, technology and engineering.” It “differs from other advisory bodies in the Commission in that it does not have a specific subject remit, but tackles issues that are of cross-cutting nature, with a clear societal dimension.”
The members of the Science and Technology Advisory Council were chosen by JM Barroso, in consultation with…
Since 2011, the European Physical Society [EPS] has been examining and testing various methods of increasing the number of individual members. On the occasion of some EPS conferences, as for instance the EPS High Energy Physics Division conference, participants have been effectively invited to become EPS individual members. Some EPS member societies, such as the Italian Physical Society [SIF], have been actively encouraging their young members to become at the same time EPS individual members.
Other initiatives will be implemented in 2013…
The EPS Nuclear Physics Division [NPD] would like to welcome its newly elected Board members, Karlheinz Langanke (GSI and TU Darmstadt – Darmstadt, Germany) and Faiçal Azaiez (Institut de Physique Nucléaire – Orsay, France).
At the same time, the EPS and the NPD would like to thank Héloïse Goutte and Horst Stöcker for their hard work and dedication over the years.
EPS Divisions and Groups are essential to the EPS. They are created by interested and motivated physicists…
The Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East [SESAME] is a “third-generation” synchrotron light source being constructed in Jordan. SESAME, the Middle East’s first major international research centre, is a cooperative venture by scientists and governments of the region. It is being developed under the auspices of UNESCO.
At the Council meeting of 12-13 November 2012, SESAME Council Members, and scientific and technical staff…
Eminent physicists from around the world met in Glasgow at the International Zetawatt-Exawatt Science Technology conference [IZEST] hosted by the University of Strathclyde to explore new ways of investigating the fundamental structure of matter and vacuum through the use of the highest power lasers available, which is leading to a new paradigm in basic physics research.
The second IZEST Meeting was held in from 13 to 15 November 2012, to explore the possibility…
Nicole Wrightham and Alex Craig, students in mathematics at the University of Sheffield, have created a formula to calculate the number of balls to hang on a Christmas tree. The formula also determines the height of the angel, and the length of the garlands and even the number of lights.
Whether you decide to trust to your intuition, or let yourselves be guided by the formula, the EPS would like to wish all of its members, and all of the readers of e-EPS a wonderful holiday season.
Steven Hall, Managing Director of IOP Publishing has recently published an article entitled “What does Finch mean for researchers, librarians and publishers?”.
June 2012 saw publication of the Finch report into expanding access to published research findings, the UK Government’s response to the report and the issuing of a revised policy on open access publication of research papers by the UK Research Councils. All appear to be driving the UK towards the world’s most rigorous adoption…
I was speaking with a colleague recently, and we were reminiscing over my first Council meeting in Leiden (NL) in 1998. That’s when it dawned on me that I have been working for the EPS for fifteen years.
As can be expected, many things have changed. In 1997, the European Union had 15 Member Countries and the EPS had 37 Member Societies. The EU now has 27, and the EPS has 41, respectively. In 1999, the EU adopted the Euro as a single currency for 11 of its Member States (now 17). The budget for research framework programmes…
