EPS Members are invited to nominate EPS Individual Members as EPS Fellows. Individuals whose achievements in physics, whether in research, industry or education and/or through commitment to the SOCIETY warrant specific recognition are eligible to become EPS Fellows.
Nominations are now open for the Edison Volta Prize of the European Physical Society [EPS]. The award – intended to promote excellence in research – will be given in recognition of outstanding research and achievements in physics.
The European Physical Society is pleased to announce that the 2017 EPS Early Career Prizes have been awarded to:
The European Physical Society will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2018. As part of the celebrations, the EPS would like to collect photos that graphically represent the life and work of contemporary researchers. The photo competition “EPS – 50 years and counting” is now open for your submissions.
A number of vacancies will arise on the European Physical Society [EPS] Executive Committee in 2018, including the position of President-elect. According to the EPS bylaws, a Selection Committee has been created to establish a list of candidates for the replacement of outgoing members, and for the President-elect.
The selection committee is pleased to request nominations for the 2018 EPS Condensed Matter Division Europhysics Prize. The award winners will receive a cash award, as well as an invitation to attend and present their work at the DPG Spring Meeting / 27th Condensed Matter Division Conference (CMD 27) that will take place in Berlin, Germany from March 11th through 16th, 2018.
The annual Council Meeting of the European Physical Society was held on 31 March – 1 April 2017 at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen, Germany. The EPS Council is composed of representatives of the 42 EPS Member Societies and the chairpersons of the 12 Divisions, 6 Groups, and 6 Committees. Individual Members and Associate Members are each represented by 5 elected delegates. A more extensive summary of the Council meeting can be read in the report by G. Gunaratnam.
The EPS Council decided to establish the EPS Special Activity Fund in 2016.The dual purpose of this fund was to allow donors to contribute to a fund to finance projects that go beyond the standard EPS activity, and to allow organisers to apply to the fund for EPS financing.
During a session of the EPS Executive Committee, the Committee of European Integration of the European Physical Society (CEI-EPS) organised a meeting of physical societies of the EPS that are on the periphery of the European Union, or are members of the Balkan Physical Union. The purpose of the meeting was to share information among each of the societies and identify common issues affecting the societies and physics in their respective countries. Following the presentations, ideas for action by the EPS would be explored.
It is time to think who among your colleagues deserves special recognition by the European Physical Society. At Council 2017, a number of awards will be presented, and we would like to ask you for your nominations. Please note that the deadline for nominations for all awards is 28 February 2017 and can addressed per email to the EPS secretariat
The Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), located in Princeton, NJ-USA is one of the world’s foremost centers for curiosity-driven basic research. On 9 November 2016, the European Physical Society (EPS) and the American Physical Society (APS) were pleased to offically recognise the IAS as their first Joint Historic Physics Site in the United States. The text of the citation reads: “Honoring the pivotal contributions of the Institute for Advanced Study to the development of theoretical physics, including the work of Albert Einstein and many others.”
EPL, the letters journal that explores the frontiers of physics, has opened a Twitter account. This new account provides EPL with an excellent opportunity to increase engagement with its authors and enhance the visibility of EPL content within the physics community.
