Editorial – Women in physics: challenging the established stereotypes?

By Lucia Di Ciaccio. Published on 22 September 2015 in:
Editorial, September 2015, , , , ,

An equitable gender balance in physics would be beneficial for the quality of research and education, which are key elements in the economic, social and cultural development of our Society. The under-representation of women in physics is very widely debated and is central for a Society caring about the well-being of its members.

A portrait of a young physicist : Barbara Marchetti

By Lucia Di Ciaccio. Published on 22 September 2015 in:
News, September 2015, , , , ,

We publish short portraits of successful young physicists showing that physics is not reserved only to men.
Barbara Marchetti is a young Italian scientist who after having obtained a PhD in Physics at the University of Rome Tor Vergata in 2011 and a Post Doc position in Germany, is now Primary Investigator of the linac for SINBAD, a project hosted at DESY in Hamburg. The SINBAD facility will provide long term Research and Development infrastructure for the production of ultra short bunches and novel compact acceleration techniques with high field gradient. Accelerator physics is a domain where women are still underrepresented.
In August 2015 Barbara Marchetti [BM] was interviewed by Lucia Di Ciaccio [LDC], chair of the Equal Opportunities Committee of the EPS.

NuPECC Brochure “Light to Reveal the Heart of Matter”

By Angela Bracco, Gabriele-Elisabeth Körner. Published on 26 May 2015 in:
IYL 2015, May 2015, News, , , ,

NuPECC, the Nuclear Physics European Collaboration Committee (http://www.nupecc.org/) is contributing to the International Year of Light [IYL2015] with a brochure “Light to Reveal the Heart of Matter”.
We would like to show the many facets how the electromagnetic spectrum – light in its broadest sense – is featured in nuclear physics research, from high-energy gamma-rays down to scintillation light and lasers, looking into nucleons and nuclei, and connecting to other fields such as astrophysics and medicine.

The round table on “Influencing EU Science Policy” at the 2015 EPS Council in Bad Honnef

By Angela Bracco, Elisabeth Rachlew. Published on 23 April 2015 in:
April 2015, , ,

At the EPS Council meeting, which took place on 27-28 March in Bad Honnef (DE), a round table was organised on the topic of “Influencing European Commission Science Policy”. The round table attracted the attention of the participants and triggered interesting discussions. The scientific and industrial communities need to provide their viewpoints to science policy makers. EPS needs to define its own strategy and continue its collaborations with other learned societies and organisations representing different scientific fields to speak with a coherent voice in the EU.
The presentations at the round table were centred on these issues with specific inputs related to the experience of the organization (or company) represented by the speaker.
