IUPAP Young Scientists Prize in Quantum Electronics

The award ceremony for the biennial Young Scientist Prizes in Quantum Electronics of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics [IUPAP] was held on 5 December 2013 at the OPTIC 2013 conference in Chung-Li, Taiwan. This year, the Prize in Quantum Electronics (Applied Aspects) goes to Dr. Nickolas Vamivakas of the Institute of Optics, University of Rochester. The Prize in Quantum Electronics (Fundamental Aspects) goes to Dr. Kin Fai Mak of the Kavli Institute at Cornell for Nanoscale Science Laboratory for Atomic and Solid State Physics. The European Commission presented in December 2013 the first calls for projects under Horizon 2020, the European Union’s [EU] research and innovation programme over the period 2014-2020.

International Max-Planck Partnership launched by Scottish universities

Frances Saunders is the new IOP president

Dr. Frances Saunders took up her position as president of the Institute of Physics [IOP] on 1 October 2013, succeeding Sir Peter Knight. Dr Frances Saunders is the second female president of the IOP, after Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell (2008-2010, and 2011 ad interim). She will serve as IOP president until 30 September 2015.

CERN welcomes Ukraine as an Associate Member

Since the 3 October 2013, Ukraine is an Associate Member of CERN. It represents the first step for Ukraine to become a full member of CERN and a concrete step towards the integration of Ukraine into Europe.
