Scientific animation: when science is pop
What happens when a group of young researchers decides to mix together passion for science and “pop culture”? The answer is in Trieste, in the North-East of Italy, where in mid-April 2016, four guys with the help of few beers founded Science Industries, the local EPS Young Minds section.
The Science Industries association was born with a clear idea in mind: science is not only beautiful to do, but also nice to share, involving and entertaining the public. The main goal of the association is to create contacts between people of any age and cultural background and the world around them. How? By explaining science using pop culture references and interactive media, with the intention of encouraging people to get involved and be part of it.
In its mission to reach everybody, Science Industries often mixes science with other cultural features, in particular, music. Based on the belief that science can entertain and unite people like music does, some of their main activities mix sound, music and physics, like the workshop “Sounds Right? Sounds Good!”. The radio is one of the favourite media of the association: weekly, the team is on-air with “3600 secondi”, a radio broadcast held in collaboration with RadioInCorso.it. The perfect mix between music and science, however, comes with the Science Concert, a show of live music, science and comedy, which was awarded the second best activity prize at the 7th EPS YM Leadership Meeting in Prague.
There is not only music in Science Industries activities but also exhibits, water rockets, and unconventional talks. These are just some of the activities that since that summer 2016 have seen Science Industries participate in the main scientific festivals in Trieste and in Italy.
Networking is another important aspect in which the Trieste section is strongly involved: from poster sessions oriented to master and PhD students to meet-up events for the younger students, the associations aims at putting in contact young researchers of different branches of physics and science in general.
When summer is coming, the activities of Science Industries continue: summer sky observations, new dates of the science concert, festivals… The agenda sees the association busy all summer long, starting from the Trieste Mini Maker Fair 2018 in late July, until the European Researchers’ Night in September.
