Science4People’s biggest activity – ELS -Beit Sahour event
Science4People conducted a new activity at the Lutheran Evangelical School – Beit Sahour on Saturday, 11/11/2017. The activity was conducted in two steps on two subsequent days.
On the first day, the S4P team members trained a group of school students on a selection of scientific experiments, until the students mastered them.
Then, on the second day, the trained students presented the experiments they trained on to the whole school along with the team members who supervised them and presented, as well, a number of other experiments.
This activity is considered as the biggest activity of “Science4People-Bethlehem University” team. It was attended by 230 students from the 4th grade up to the 10th grade. The presentation lasted for six hours, with a great exchange between the divulgators and the young public, and a very interactive participation of some students who attended the event who decided to try to do some of the experiments themselves.
It is important to mention that the “Science4People-Bethlehem University” team started its work at the end of spring 2017. This activity is the third activity for the team, as the team does such activities every 1-2 months and each activity is in a new school. In each activity we try to add something new to our work, and increase the number of experiments offered, train students from schools to involve them actively in the presentation of the scientific experiments, increase the number of students attending the activity and to choose students from different age groups. It is important that we also work on how to communicate the experiments to students of different ages. The choice of experiments that will be presented every time depends on the targeted age group of the students. In the same way, the explanation of the experiments has to be tailored on the age group of the students that will attend the scientific dissemination event.
The “Science4People-Bethlehem University” team aims to expand the network of schools they visit to reach as many students as possible from different ages and social backgrounds. It also aims to attract students to scientific thinking through scientific experiments, which they offer in simple and easy ways and with simple tools in order to convey the idea of the relevance of science to our daily lives.
