ELI-ALPS opening ceremony
On May 23rd 2017, the Opening Ceremony of ELI-ALPS took place in Szeged, in the presence of the Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán.
The new centre is part of the European distributed infrastructure ELI (Extreme Light Infrastructure) for the investigation of light-matter interactions at the highest intensities and shortest time scales, a project on the 2006 Roadmap of ESFRI and the first International Research Infrastructure of Pan-European interest fully funded in its construction phase by the “newer” Member States, with their national and European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF). The ELI project has three complementary pillars: ELI-Attosecond Light Pulse Source (ELI-ALPS) in Szeged, Hungary, ELI-Nuclear Physics (ELI-NP) in Magurele, Romania, and ELI-Beamlines (ELI-BL) in Dolní Břežany, Czech Republic. The main scientific mission of the Hungarian pillar is to enable visualisation of ultrafast structural dynamics of matter. The three pillars will start gradually to operate in 2018 – 2020 and will form ELI-ERIC.
The opening ceremony was followed by a presentation by professor Ferenc Krausz, Director of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, Munich, on Attosecond science and applications.
