On 3 September 2014, the Synchrotron-light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East [SESAME] booster came into full operation. The Booster Synchrotron – the second machine in the SESAME acceleration chain – is now accelerating electrons to 800 MeV.
Reaching this energy is a milestone for SESAME, which aims to bring scientists from the region together through international scientific cooperation…
I had the great privilege to be asked to attend the 50th Anniversary of the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste which was held over 5-9 October 2014. This was a wonderful experience for many reasons.
Of course, ICTP is well-known as a world hub of theoretical physics and a leading center, but I had an especially personal reason to feel honoured with this invitation. As a PhD student in 1991, I attended an ICTP Winter College on Ultrafast Phenomena, and seeing at first hand the commitment of leading international scientists to leave their well-equipped labs for a few weeks and commit their time to training students from all corners of the world made a…
The 19th National Conference on Physics and 24th Iberian Meeting for Teaching Physics – jointly named “FISICA 2014” – was held in Lisbon, Portugal, from 2-4 September 2014. This biennial meeting is organized by the Portuguese Physical Society [SPF] and attracts physicists, teachers and students from all over the country and from neighbouring Spain. The total number of participants was 250.
This year’s event was hosted and co-sponsored by the Instituto Superior Técnico, the science and engineering faculty of the University of Lisbon. The local organizing committee enlisted the assistance of a team of twenty physics…
This year CERN celebrated its 60 years anniversary under the slogan “science for peace”. Among the many events organized by a number of CERN Member States, there were scientific colloquia also at CERN organized throughout the year. One colloquium, covering the history of the LEP era and held during the September meeting of the CERN Scientific Policy Committee was dedicated to Herwig Schopper, who celebrated his 90th birthday this year.
Herwig Schopper, former President of the EPS (1994 to 1996) and Director General of CERN from 1981 to 1988, had indeed helped to open up CERN during LEP times for a growing scientific community from all over the world…

The European Physical Society is proud to announce the award of the 2014 Early Career Prizes to Ian Chapman and Román Orús
The EPS Early Career Prizes is new Prize from the European Physical Society [EPS] created to recognise contributions from young physicists to European research. The first laureates of this prize are Ian Chapman from the Culham Science Centre, United Kingdom, and Romàn Orùs from the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, Germany…
Strong field science has become one of the most active areas of research with the development of ultra-high power lasers. Ever since the introduction of the chirped pulse amplification technique in 1985, available laser power has increased dramatically. The coupling of the CPA technique with picosecond and femtosecond laser technology has made compact ultrashort high-power lasers readily accessible, boosting their usage in almost all areas of science, medicine and engineering. Fascinatingly ultra-high power lasers with power exceeding 100 TW or even 1 PW are now available or being prepared in a number of institutes around the world. Starting from the development of the 0.85-PW laser…
