The 4th International Particle Accelerator Conference [IPAC’13] will take place in Shanghai, China, from 12 to 17 May 2013. The conference will bring together accelerator scientists and engineers from all over the world to discuss the latest developments in a field that underpins many areas of research, from high energy physics to structural biology. The three previous IPAC conferences have each attracted over 1000 participants. As a truly international conference series, the venue moves between Asia, Europe and North America on a three-year cycle. IPAC’12 was held in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA in May 2012; in 2014 the conference will return to Europe, when IPAC’14 will be held in Dresden, Germany.

IPAC’13 will be the first return of the conference to Asia since the series was inaugurated with IPAC’10 in Kyoto, Japan. Shanghai promises to be a spectacular venue. Its history stretches back more than 700 years, and today it is one of the world’s largest cities with a population of over 20 million people within its metropolitan area. Western and Eastern cultures co-exist within the city, providing an ideal backdrop for a conference that exemplifies perfectly the international nature of scientific research.

The conference will cover all aspects of accelerator science, engineering and technology. As in previous years, an industrial exhibition and a special students’ poster session will feature prominently in the scientific programme. Proceedings from IPAC’13, like those from previous IPACs and many other accelerator conferences and workshops, will be published on the Joint Accelerator Conferences Website [JACoW]. Over the past 12 years, JACoW has published over 110 sets of proceedings, providing a resource of enormous value for the accelerator community. There are now over a million downloads each year of papers from JACoW. All papers on JACoW are available at no cost to readers.

The European membership of the Organizing Committee and Scientific Programme Committee for IPAC’13 is drawn from the Elected Board of the EPS Accelerator Group.

Pushing the boundaries of cold atoms

A 4-week programme “Pushing the boundaries of cold atoms” will held in Stockholm, Sweden, from 21 January 2013 to 15 February 2013. It aims to bring together researchers and students working in this field, both theoreticians as well as experimentalists.

The programme focuses on new directions within the field of ultracold atomic gases. Interesting topics include for example: Synthetic gauge fields for cold atoms, Multi-component atoms, spinor condensates...
