2012 Kavli Prizes awarded
The winners of the 2012 Kavli Prizes – which are awarded in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience – have been announced. The awards – which include a total cash prize of 1 million dollars in each field – were presented by His Majesty King Harald V of Norway at a special ceremony held in Oslo on 4 September this year.
The 2012 Kavli Prize in Astrophysics was awarded to David C. Jewitt, Jane X. Luu and Michael E. Brown, for “discovering and characterizing the Kuiper Belt and its largest members, work that led to a major advance in the understanding of the history of our planetary system”.
The 2012 Kavli Prize in Nanoscience was presented to Mildred S. Dresselhaus in recognition of “her pioneering contributions to the study of phonons, electron-phonon interactions, and thermal transport in nanostructures”.
The 2012 Kavli Prize in Neuroscience was awarded to Cornelia Isabella Bargmann, Winfried Denk and Ann M. Graybiel for “elucidating basic neuronal mechanisms underlying perception and decision.”
The Kavli Prizes are sponsored by the Kavli Foundation, the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters and the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research.
