9th annual SESAME Users’ Meeting

The 9th annual Synchrotron Light for Experimental Science and Applications in the Middle East [SESAME] Users’ Meeting was held in Amman, Jordan on 12-14 November this year. 130 people attended the event – including 50 local participants – during which the SESAME community gathered to discuss current developments and upcoming collaborative efforts.

SESAME, which is being built in Jordan under the umbrella of UNESCO, will be an international synchrotron radiation source.

The meeting programme covered such topics as: archaeology and cultural heritage; atomic, molecular, and chemical physics; biology, drug design, and medical applications; materials science and nanotechnology; and SESAME machine and phase I beamline development. In addition, a tour of the SESAME site was conducted on the final day of the meeting.

Following the meeting, the SESAME – Japan Society for Promotion of Science School was held from 4-16 November. 50 participants took part in the school, which featured lectures, discussions, practice sessions and user presentations.

The meeting was sponsored by UNESCO, IAEA, ICTP, the SESAME Jordanian National Committee, Al-Balqa Applied University, Jordan Atomic Energy Commission, and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Travel grants were also provided by the American Chemical Society, the American Physical Society, the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft, the European Physical Society, Institute of Physics, and the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics.
