As part of EUCARD2 activities, and co-sponsored by EPS Technology and Innovation Group (TIG), a workshop on the status of new developments in Accelerator-Driven Systems or ADS was held at CERN on February 7-9.
European Physical Society Physics Education Division
Since 2000, the European Physical Society’s Physics Education Division has been contributing to awareness of the relevance of physics in everyday culture, to interaction amongst schools and universities and to a better quality of physics teaching at all levels.
The Physics Education Division achieves this by addressing and promoting physics, the continued education of teachers, large scale educational changes – such as the Bologna process – and successful new teaching methods, taking into account differences and similarities in the European education systems…
Nominations for 2012 Kavli Prizes open
Nominations have opened for candidates for the 2012 Kavli Prizes, which are given for outstanding research in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience. The deadline for nominations is 1 December, 2011.
Each winner, in the three fields covered, will receive gold medal, a scroll and prize money to the sum of $1,000,000. The prize winners will be announced in June next year, with the award ceremony taking place in Oslo, Norway, on 4 September 2012…
Report on European gender consultation
The European Gender Summit has published the results of its Public Consultation on the Future of Gender and Innovation in Europe.
The consultation was designed to complement the European Commission Green Paper ‘From Challenges to Opportunities: Towards a Common Strategic Framework for EU Research and Innovation Funding’, and is hoped will contribute to a better understanding of how Europe can enhance its research and innovation systems, through the addressing of gender issues…
McBean: International Council for Science president-elect
The International Council for Science [ICSU] appointed Gordon McBean president-elect during their General Assembly in Rome, Italy, which was held between 24 September and 1 October this year.
McBean, a geography and political science professor at the University of Western Ontario, is a noted expert in the fields of climate change and risk reduction. A fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, he currently also serves as the chair of the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences and the director of Western’s Policy Studies Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction…

EGO-ICRR gravitational wave meeting
A meeting between the European Gravitational Observatory [EGO] and the Institute for Cosmic Ray Research [ICRR], on the topic of gravitational wave research, was held at the University of Tokyo’s Kashiwa campus on 4-5 October this year.

IHEP appoints Wang Yifang as new institute director
The Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has appointed Wang Yifang as their new director. The decision was announced during a meeting held at the institute on the 24 October.
The Institute of High Energy Physics [IHEP] is the biggest basic science research centre in China. Fields studied at the institute include accelerator physics and technologies, astrophysics, particle physics and synchrotron and nuclear radiation applications.
