Cosmic honour for former EPS president
Sir Arnold Wolfendale has been awarded the first IUPAP-TIFR1 Homi Bhabha Medal and Prize, for his work in the field of cosmic ray astrophysics. The prize will be presented at the 2011 International Cosmic Ray Conference in Beijing, China, in August this year.
The Homi Bhabha Medal and Prize – which consists of a certificate, medal, $5000 cheque and an invitation to give a public lecture at the TIFR in Mumbai – is awarded to active scientists who have made distinguished contributions to the fields of high-energy cosmic ray physics and astroparticle physics, across an extended academic career. The prize is awarded biennially.
Wolfendale, who was the EPS president from 1999 to 2001, has been a cosmic ray researcher for the past 63 years. During this time he has revitalised the teaching of astronomy at Durham University, where he was a professor of physics between 1965 and 1992.
A long time supporter and former president2 of the EPS, Wolfendale has also served as the president of a number of other scientific bodies, and on the staff of the universities of Ceylon, Hong Kong and Manchester. Between 1991 and 1995 he was also the Astronomer Royal.
