ESFRI releases new report on research infrastructures
The European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) have released their Strategy Report and Roadmap Update 20101. The chair of ESFRI, Beatrix Vierkorn-Rudolph presented the roadmap to the European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, in Brussels on 3 May this year.
“Pooling national and EU resources to build pan-European research infrastructures – rather than each Member State simply going it alone – is common sense and a key part of the EU’s Innovation Union plan,” said Geoghegan-Quinn. “These collaborative efforts create economies of scale, boost EU competitiveness and deliver better value for money for taxpayers.”
The report consists of two main parts – the work programme of ESFRI for the upcoming years, and a roadmap which illustrates 48 Europe-wide Research Infrastructures and major upgrades which will meet the needs of research communities in the European Union for the next 10-20 years. The updated roadmap contains six new projects – three in the area of biological and medical sciences, and three in the field of energy.
ESFRI – which was established by the European Commission in 2002 – exists to support the development and operation of research infrastructures, at a European and international level.
Vierkorn-Rudolph will also be penning an article on the roadmap, to be published in an upcoming issue of EPN.
