Week of Innovative Regions in Europe
The Week of Innovative Regions in Europe 2011 (WIRE2011) conference is being held between 7-9 June 2011 in Debrecen, Hungary.
The conference – during which consideration is to be given to the documents ‘EUROPE 2020, a strategy for a smart, sustainable and inclusive development strategy’ and ‘Innovation Union Flagship Initiative‘ – will focus on knowledge, innovation and competitiveness in the economy, with respect to research infrastructure investments and clusters – and how they can enhance innovation and regional development.
Questions for discussion at WIRE2011 include:
- How can resources devoted to research and development – such as structural funds, the Research Framework Programme and the Competitiveness and Innovation Programme – be used more efficiently?
- How can specialisation strategies relating to EU Regional Policy optimise the use of research infrastructures?
- How should the cooperation between EU regions, and coherence between the priorities defined at the different levels of governance, be ensured?
- Will member states complete the construction of 60 per cent of the ESFRI Roadmap Research Infrastructure projects by 2015, as called for by the Innovation Union Flagship Initiative?
- How can tools such as European Research Infrastructure Consortia help to improve the development of large research infrastructures?
The conference, which is endorsed by the Hungarian EU Council Presidency is being jointly organised by Észak-Alföld Regional Development and Innovation Agency and the European Commission. The European Physical Society will be represented at the event by the current EPS president, Luisa Cifarelli.
