EPS AG Accelerator Prizes announced
The EPS Accelerator Group (EPS AG) is pleased to announce the recipients of the EPS AG Accelerator prizes of 2011. The awards will be presented at the International Particle Accelerator Conference (IPAC’11) in San Sebastian, Spain on the 4-9 September this year.
There are three main EPS AG awards: The Rolf Wideröe Prize for outstanding work in the field of accelerator physics, the Gersh Budker Prize for a recent, significant contribution to the field and the Frank Sacherer Prize for a notable contribution to the accelerator field by someone in the early part of their career.
The Rolf Wideröe Prize is to be presented to Shin-ichi Kurokawa, of the KEK Laboratory in Tsukuba, Japan, for outstanding leadership in the design, construction and operation of several high-energy accelerators, including the KEK PS, TRISTAN and the KEK B-Factory.
An ardent supporter of education in the field of physics, Kurokawa has also played a valuable role in the development of accelerator science throughout the Far East – as well as forging collaborations in the field between Asia, Europe and the United States.
Yasushige Yano is the recipient of the Gersh Budker Prize, for his work on the design, construction and successful operation of the Radioactive Ion Beam Factory (RIBF), the world’s first radioactive ion beam facility based on superconducting sector-magnet cyclotrons. Formerly the RIKEN Cyclotron Laboratory, Yano’s direction saw the transformation of the center, alongside major advanced in cyclotron technology and the discovery of many unknown nuclei – with the potential for many more ground breaking results in the future.
The Frank Sacherer Prize goes to Rogelio Tomás Garcia of CERN. A talented experimenter and theorist, Tomás is noted for his many important contributions to accelerator physics-– especially in the field of beam optics – and additionally for his work with the LHC operation and upgrades.
The conference at which the prizes will be presented is the second in the IPAC series – which has its origins in three previous regional conferences, APAC, EPAC and PAC1. Registration for the conference, which is being held in the Kursaal conference centre, is presently open.
The recipients of two other prizes are to be announced after the IPAC’11 conference – the first for a student, or trainee, accelerator physicist or engineer for the quality of their work and future potential; with the second given to the best posters from the student session. More information about the awards – and their recipients – can be found on the EPAC website.
